    Practices of sympoiesis versus the seducing allure of contemporary perplexities

    International Relations scholarly production takes into account the micro and the macro scale, i.e., time and space contexts that capture both political and economic regimes, as well as livelihoods and practical life-supporting and life-enhancing functions and social roles. When addressing human faculties, such as memory, will or imagination, and understanding the ultimatum nature of current challenges, the pluri-crises, social and ecological and beyond, it is possible to argue that it is imagination that takes the lead. In other words, outstanding vanguard pioneer action is being taken by bottom-up governance, grass-roots initiatives, transnational networking and community-led action. This action is fuelled by imagination, that is, by the possibility of envisioning an alternative possible future. It is this imagination exercise that uses memory as a powerful resource and will as a detonator, a catalyser and energiser of free action and of free thought, individually and collectively. Focusing on real life examples and tackling the macro level rationale it is possible to suggest new perspectives, to explore a novel hindsight and to propose new prospective analysis and insights. History is history but the future is perfect.

    Logical positivism, performativity of images and the neo-baroque: Revisiting the myth of totalitarianism

    This text proposes an open reflexion, a work-in-progress exercise that aims at waking up sleeping consciousnesses, in particular the authors’ own existential disquietness. Consequently, the idea is to try to keep as many open knowledge fields as possible as long as they may contribute to understanding the role of communities and of community-led social change as an empowering strategy against totalitarianism. The central message of totalitarianism, in political economy, political science, political philosophy, international economics and international relations (IR) is that it occurs as a self-fuelling mechanism, spreading like wildfire and holding the reigns of myth building, myth construction and myth creation so that the myth is itself the totalitarian phenomenon. Democracy tends to be presented as the antagonist of totalitarianism and it is also based in symbolic production. Two myth building mechanisms are confronted as the clash of Titans, and human history is told according to the narratives that create, feed and sustain the dramaturgy of this open scene. In philosophy, considering epistemic shifts and the history of science, logical positivism emerges in the nineteenth century European white male dominated bourgeois’ context, spreading across the Atlantic leading to pragmatism, and becoming the dominant thinking paradigm across economic science, political science and IR. The myth building process operates through the performativity of images, which consists of the neo-baroque saturation of the rational part of emotions and of the emotional part of rationality. The result is a playing field that reinvents modernity on a daily basis, refusing determinism and reformatting the Enlightenment promise of placing science at the service of human interests: radical and fundamental interests that necessarily are diverse, plural, inclusive, open and are built on trust and empowerment mechanisms. It is literally a new universe of new meanings that imply a deep dive into myth building. That is, from human rights, to fundamental rights, to animal and nature rights, to rights of the original peoples and beyond, a new world of possibilities is emerging. Myths are inescapable yet the power of resignification, i.e., to re-allocate, dislocate, denotate, connotate and detonate differently, is open and infinite.

    Embodied activism in networks of social movements: Relationality , interiority , and affect as hybrid social learning practices

    Grassroots-led networks of social movements are integral to a broader network of change, linking diverse initiatives through regional and transnational nodes. Beyond their organizational infrastructures, these Translocal Networks (TLNs) constitute a noospheric field of relational becoming, where collective actions, affects, and material-discursive exchanges form a connective tissue of sympoietic co-agency from. This connective sphere operates across multi-scalar and hybrid spaces—digital, embodied, and affective—enabling new forms of social learning and collective subjectivation. While network and social movement studies have explored decentralized governance and progressive and prefigurative strategies in new social movements, less attention has been given to their hybrid, liminal and intersubjective practices and territories. Emerging ontologies of interbeing, cosmologies of togetherness, and epistemologies of deep change challenge representational approaches by foregrounding the mutual constitution of human and more-than-human actors. These relational processes demand methodological research innovation capable of engaging digital narratives, embodied practices, and affective resonances as intertwined forces of transformation. In diverse TLN organizations, deep (culture) change involves shifting systems by addressing held values and worldviews and the belief that societal transformation comes from changing mindsets, perceptions, cultural practices, habits and values. In the face of increased isolationism and the fragmentation of the world, this paper argues that nowadays TLNs of social movements enact new materialist politics of vitality through practices that dissolve the human/nonhuman and mind/matter dichotomies, redefining activism as a distributed, affective, and co-constitutive process. Their hybrid repertoires of ‘inner and outer’ activism mobilize affect, embodiment, technology, and collective consciousness toward regenerative cultural practices. Thus, understanding these new social movement phenomena requires acknowledging inter-subjectivity, materiality, and discourse as co-productive forces shaping social learning, imagination, and activism. This exploratory study, grounded in critical literature review and content analysis, examines the Global Ecovillage Network and the Transition Network as TLNs case studies. Textual and visual narratives are analyzed to trace how new materialist agencies emerge through intra-actions (interior yet globally connected practices) between their digital platforms, communities, and cultural practices. Anchored in new materialism’s transdisciplinary paradigm, the study engages epistemological, ontological, and axiological dimensions that recognize matter as vibrant, relational, and active in shaping social realities. This framework extends beyond representational analysis by focusing on how material, affective, and discursive forces co-act to sustain hybrid learning and regenerative transformation in post-millennial social movements.
