consolidação do modelo ideal de descendência ancorado na “norma dos dois filhos”;
concepção do “modelo procriativo único”.
Western societies have witnessed large-scale changes in the place of children in the family throughout the twentieth century: not only quantitative changes, related to the decline in fertility rates and to the consolidation of an ideal model of offspring known as “the two child norm”; but also qualitative changes, linked to the motivations for childbearing and the functions that children fulfil in family life which are no longer instrumental, as in the past, but mainly emotional ones. These two main trends of the place of children in present-day families have given rise to the idea of an “unique childbearing pattern”. The present thesis challenges this idea, by looking at the different ways of representing and building the place of children in families, and by taking into account, not only fertility trends, but also the functions of children. The data for this research was taken from a 1999 survey on Portuguese families with children, where we analysed fertility representations, expectations, behaviours and constraints, as well as the functions of children, both symbolic and practical. Findings reveal two main lines of social change in the recent period of Portuguese history (from the beginning of seventies to the middle of nineties): the modernisation of fertility and the decline in instrumental functions, namely the productive and support ones. But these changes interact with a plural social landscape, where diversity prevails. Analyses of the social contexts of the women interviewed showed that different profiles – traditional, transitional and modern ones – coexist nowadays in Portuguese society. |
