O segmento low-cost da indústria hoteleira em Portugal: o caso dos hostels

Abstract

As últimas três décadas são caracterizadas por um crescimento significativo do número de turistas que procuram alojamentos de baixo custo, um pouco por todo o Mundo. O que inicialmente se considerava ser um fenómeno associado aos turistas Backpackers ou jovens mochileiros, é actualmente compreendido por viajantes de diferentes classes sócio-económicas. Portugal não é excepção e tem vindo a acompanhar, desde há dez anos, esta evolução. Prova disso, é o nascimento e desenvolvimento acentuado de um novo segmento de indústria hoteleira «low-cost»: os Hostels. O conhecimento e informação existente sobre os Hostels em Portugal é ainda muito escassa e o acesso a dados relevantes muito reduzidos. Neste sentido, com esta dissertação pretendeu-se lançar o desafio de compreender e caracterizar este novo fenómeno. Os principais objectivos desta pesquisa foram: (1) definir o conceito de Hostel e enquadrá-lo num contexto histórico; (2) compreender os aspectos intrínsecos e a legislação vigente aplicável aos Hostels em Portugal; (3) compreender o fenómeno de crescimento do mercado dos Hostels no segmento hoteleiro «low-cost» em Portugal; (4) caracterizar o perfil dos clientes tipo e do empresário tipo dos Hostels em Portugal. Neste âmbito, este estudo fornece uma visão actual do segmento dos Hostels em Portugal, recorrendo-se para o efeito, a estatísticas disponíveis, pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, a um inquérito estruturado (desenvolvido tendo por base os conceitos adquiridos ao longo da revisão bibliográfica) realizado junto de 93 clientes, bem como a entrevistas semi-estruturadas a proprietários deste tipo de alojamento.

The last three decades have been characterized by a significant increase in the number of tourists looking for low-cost accommodation, all over the world. What was first considered to be a phenomenon associated with young tourists backpackers, is currently, seen to travelers from different socio-economic classes. Portugal is not an exception and has been following this evolution, since the last ten years. Therefore this birth and development marked a new segment of the low-cost hospitality industry: the Hostels. The knowledge and information existing on Hostels in Portugal is still very scarce and the access to relevant data very limited. In this sense, this dissertation aims to launch the challenge to understand and characterize this new phenomenon. The main objectives of this research were: (1) to define the concept of Hostel and frame it in a historical context, (2) to understand the intrinsic aspects and the legislation applicable to Hostels in Portugal, (3) to understand the phenomenon of growing markets for Hostels in the low-cost hotel industry in Portugal, (4) to characterize the client profile and the entrepreneur profile of Hostels in Portugal. In this context, this study provides a current overview of the segment of Hostels in Portugal, using statistics available, biographic and documentary research, a structured survey (developed on the basis of concepts acquired during the literature review) conducted among 93 clients, as well as semi-structured interviews to owners of this type of accommodation.
