Modernidade(s) pela mão da tradição: Reinvenção construtiva: Álvaro Machado e Álvaro Siza

Abstract

Os processos de reinvenção construtiva que analisámos na obra de Álvaro Machado e de Álvaro Siza, conduziram um método eclético, que tirou partido dos factos construtivos da tradição arquitetónica. A relação que estabelecemos entre modernidade e tradição, nasceu de um nexo culturalista que Pedro Vieira de Almeida construiu, em torno de valores abstratos, para alicerçar uma relação de continuidade cultural, entre o neorromânico de 1900, e obras produzidas por arquitetos portugueses, no último quartel do século XX. A dissecação desse nexo, além de revelar a busca por uma estrutura identitária, na arquitetura moderna portuguesa, estabeleceu as bases para a fundamentação de uma relação de continuidade, entre a(s) modernidade(s) de Álvaro Machado e de Álvaro Siza. A natureza concreta do novo nexo que construímos, apoiou-se nas ligações culturais que observamos na estrutura, nos materiais, e na unidade expressivo-construtiva que patenteou o sistema construtivo das obras desses dois arquitetos. A importância da componente construtiva da arquitetura, é alicerçada, ao longo da investigação, por uma revisão historiográfica. A matriz vitruviana que a dirigiu, revelou pouco interesse pelo sistema construtivo, por parte das análises históricas que se debruçaram sobre os processos que desencadearam propostas de modernidade. A dissecação a que submetemos os estudos de caso, permitiu demonstrar que a reinvenção construtiva, enquanto operação tradicionalizadora, contribuiu para o advento de modernidade(s), cuja estruturação, teve por base, uma conciliação entre inovação e tradição. O potencial modernizante da tradição, é revelado, no contexto da arquitetura portuguesa do século XX, pela desconstrução a que submetemos as narrativas históricas canónicas, e pelo olhar radiográfico, com que observamos o sistema construtivo de obras culturalmente enraizadas.

The processes of constructive reinvention that we have analyzed in the work of Álvaro Machado and Álvaro Siza led an eclectic method that took advantage of the constructive facts of architectural tradition. The relationship we establish between modernity and tradition was born out of a culturalist nexus that Pedro Vieira de Almeida constructed around abstract values to underpin a relationship of cultural continuity between the neo-Romantic period of 1900 and the works produced by portuguese architects in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The dissection of this nexus, as well as revealing the search for an identity structure in modern Portuguese architecture, established the basis for a relationship of continuity between the modernity(ies) of Álvaro Machado and Álvaro Siza. The concrete nature of the nexus that we have constructed is based on the cultural connections that are observed in the structure, the materials, and the expressive-constructive unity that patent the constructive system of the works of these two architects. The importance of the constructive component of architecture is underpinned throughout the investigation by a historiographic review. The Vitruvian matrix that directed it has revealed little interest in the constructive system, on the part of the historical analyses that have focused on the processes that triggered proposals for modernity. The dissection to which we submitted the case studies allowed us to demonstrate that the constructive reinvention, as a traditionalizing operation, contributed to the advent of modernity(ies), whose structuring was based on a conciliation between innovation and tradition. The modernizing potential of tradition is revealed, in the context of twentieth century Portuguese Architecture, by the deconstruction to which we submit canonical historical narratives, and by the radiographic look with which we observe the construction system of culturally rooted works.
