Racism is a phenomenon that permeates societies and social institutions. Schools are institutions where, from an early age, manifestations of racism are felt by afro-descendant children and youth. Within the school environment, teachers play a significant role for students and have a major impact on their learning process. In Portugal, due to the historical backgrounds of the Black community, teachers, like all individuals in society, may carry stereotypes and prejudices regarding afro-descendant students Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate how attitudes toward afro-descendant students relate to attitudes toward racial diversity within the school, through self-efficacy for diversity. Additionally, it sought to understand the role of Colorblind ideology and school values in these relationships. Through an online questionnaire, a sample of 125 white Portuguese teachers (of European origin) was obtained. The results demonstrate that attitudes toward afro-descendant students are positively related to attitudes toward racial diversity, and this relationship is mediated by self-efficacy for diversity. It was also found that the value of Support (vs. Performance) moderates the relationship between attitudes toward Afro-descendant students and self-efficacy for diversity. This study underscores the importance of teachers' attitudes in the academic performance of Afro-descendant students. |
