Representações dos media sobre os impactos psicossociais das alterações climáticas, em Portugal

Abstract

Atualmente, a crise climática é um dos principais problemas que as sociedades enfrentam e cada vez mais são reportados impactos no bem-estar e saúde humana, não só diretos, através de catástrofes naturais, mas também indiretos, ao nível da saúde mental, nomeadamente através da mediatização da crise climática e seus efeitos. A pesquisa da Psicologia Ambiental tem-se interessado, cada vez mais, em analisar o fenómeno crescente da eco-ansiedade, no entanto esta ainda é uma área recente de pesquisa. O presente trabalho exploratório pretendeu contribuir para esta área de pesquisa analisando se e como os jornais portugueses representam os impactos da crise climática na saúde mental e aspetos psicossociais associados, tais como a atribuição de responsabilidade sobre a crise climática, o tipo de comportamentos de coping (individuais ou coletivos) referidos, e a relação com a vinculação ao lugar a diferentes escalas. Para isso, procedeu-se á análise temática dos artigos de 5 jornais portugueses sobre impactos da crise climática na saúde mental (N=60). Os resultados sugerem que a eco-ansiedade é o impacto mais identificado, seguindo-se o stress, o medo e a preocupação. As responsabilizações pelas alterações climáticas são amplamente atribuídas ao governo, o que parece influenciar negativamente a autoeficácia individual percebida. A depressão e a eco-ansiedade parecem estar mais associadas à falta de ação. Os jovens, representados como as principais vítimas, valorizam sobretudo ações de coping coletivas. Não foi encontrada uma relação clara entre a vinculação ao lugar a diferentes escalas e os impactos psicossociais das alterações climáticas ou comportamentos associados.

Currently, the climate crisis is one of the main problems that societies are facing and its impacts on human health and well-being are being increasingly reported, not only its direct impacts, such as natural catastrophes, but also indirect impacts, such as on mental health, namely through the mediatization of the climate crisis and its effects. Environmental Psychology has thus been increasingly interested in analyzing the growing phenomenon of eco-anxiety, but this is still a recent area of research. The present exploratory project aimed to contribute to this area of research, by examining if and how Portuguese newspapers represent the impacts of the climate crisis on mental health and associated psychosocial dimensions, such as the attribution of responsibility for the climate crisis, the type of coping behaviors (individual or collective) that are referred to, and the relations with place attachment at different scales. A thematic analysis of the articles of 5 Portuguese newspapers about the impacts of the climate crisis on mental health was performed (N=60). Results suggest that eco-anxiety is the most identified impact, followed by stress, fear and worry. The responsibility for the climate crisis is clearly attribute to the Government, which seems to negatively influence individual self-efficacy. Depression and eco-anxiety seem to be more associated with lack of action. The youth, represented as the main victims, seem to mainly value collective coping strategies. No clear relationship between place attachment at different scales and the psychosocial impacts of climate change or associated behaviors was found.
