Abstract: | This study aims to investigate the relationship between travel constraints, travel motivations and existential authenticity on the intention to accept a simulated tourism environment as a substitute for real travel. This is a pertinent line of research given the fact that tourism environments, experiences, and destinations are increasingly being simulated, thus the need for research on the subject will no doubt gain traction as we move into the future.
A unique questionnaire was designed and submitted to a convenient sample of 210 past visitors to Disney's World Showcase at EPCOT in Orlando, Florida. In the estimation of the proposed model, mediation effects were found, with significant positive and negative relationships, between the travel constraints, and the dependent variables (1) the intention to visit the real places (Y1) or (2) the intention to accept the World Showcase as a substitute for real travel (Y2), when the mediating variables are the travel motivations.
Interaction effects were also detected between certain travel motivations and (1) the intention to visit the real places (Y1) or (2) the intention to accept the World Showcase as a substitute for real travel (Y2), when the moderator is the perception of existential authenticity during their visit to EPCOT. Those who possess strong perceptions of existential authenticity during their visit, were less likely to want to visit the real places/landmarks - however, on the whole, it is not supported that these simulated tourism experiences could spoil or even substitute a trip overseas. |
