In the context of the attachment theory, the internal working models (IWM) and self have been considered interconnected since their genesis, developing in a complementary way. Some studies have supported this proposal. However, there are still few empirical contributions that analyze this relationship during the preschool period. The present study aimed to better understand the associations between children’s attachment representations and their self-concept, controlling for their verbal competence and sex. Forty-eight children between the ages of 4 and 6 participated in this study. Attachment representations were assessed using the Attachment Story Completation Task and the self-concept through The Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children. The results show that children with secure attachment representations have a higher self-concept in the cognitive domain. The cognitive dimension of self-concept, thus, appears to be the most valued in the context of the relationship with the attachment figures in the preschool age. |
