Da memória à refuncionalização: a Fábrica da Pólvora de Barcarena

Abstract

O presente trabalho propõe a reabilitação e refuncionalização da parte de cima Fábrica da Pólvora de Barcarena não descorando o peso desta herança e procurando fazer uma leitura sensível do "genius loci" da fábrica e sua envolvente. Após a leitura do complexo e da sua envolvente paisagística procurou-se estudar e encontrar um programa que não adulterasse a essência dos edificados que restam da fábrica, considerando-se assim que o programa de Centro de Congressos permitirá não adulterar os edifícios pré-existentes. O programa dos mesmos prevê uma secretaria, pequenas salas de conferências, um espaço para stands, uma cafetaria e instalações sanitárias. Este projeto contempla ainda uma nova estrutura semienterrada para albergar os auditórios e respetivos foyers do centro de congressos, que procura resolver a relação das diferentes cotas do terreno. Para a conceção do projeto foram analisados conceitos operativos que sustentam e influenciam as tomadas de decisão ao longo do trabalho, de forma a obter a melhor resposta tendo em conta o "genius loci" deste local. Procurou-se uma análise e compreensão do termo de património, tendo como base principal o conceito de património de Françoise Choay e o conceito de refuncionalização Laurajane Smith. De seguida é analisado o conceito de arquitetura industrial, tendo em consideração a importância que a Revolução Industrial exerce nos acontecimentos consequentes. São também, analisados alguns projetos realizados em unidades fabris que têm como fundamento a reabilitação e a refuncionalização, tais como o projeto do Atelier Lacaton & Vassal, Coletiva de Arte Regional Contemporânea de França, e o projeto do Atelier Cândido Chuva Gomes, a Levada de Tomar. Relativamente à conceção da estrutura pensada para os auditórios é realizada uma análise das potencialidades da arquitetura semienterrada, de forma a enaltecer e respeitar as pré-existências e a paisagem. Procurou-se assim estudar as possíveis formas e distribuições dos espaços, onde se optou pela forma ortogonal influenciada pelo Escultor Eduardo Chillida. É também, realizado um estudo da luz, em que a influência principal para as aberturas de luz pensada para o projeto foi a obra do Arquiteto Peter Zumthor, as Termas de Vals. Por fim, é analisada uma obra semienterrada que conta com a presença de uma pré-existências, o projeto do Centro de Interpretação Vulcânica dos Capelinhos, do Arquiteto Nuno Ribeiro Lopes.

The present work proposes the rehabilitation and refunctionalisation of the upper part of the Fábrica da Pólvora de Barcarena (Gunpowder Factory of Barcarena), not discouraging the weight of this heritage and trying to make a sensitive reading of the "genius loci" of the factory and its surroundings. After a reading of the complex and its surrounding landscape, a study to find a program that would not adulterate the essence of the buildings that remain of the factory was essencial, so it is believed that the program of Congress Center will not adulterate the pre-existing buildings. The re-functionalization of these buildings foresees a secretariat, small conference rooms, a space for Stands, a cafeteria and sanitary facilities. This project also contemplates a new underground structure to house the auditoriums and respective foyers of the congress center, this new structure tries to solve the relation of the different levels of the land. For the conception of the project, a set of operative concepts were analyzed to support and influence the decision making throughout the work, in order to obtain the best response taking into account the "genius loci" of this site. An analysis and understanding of the term heritage were sought, having as main base the concept of heritage of Françoise Choay and the re-functionalization concept of Laurajane Smith. Then the concept of industrial architecture is analyzed, taking into account the importance that the Industrial Revolution exerts on the consequent events. It is also analyzed some projects for industrial units that are based on rehabilitation and re-functionalization, such as the project of Atelier Lacaton & Vassal, Collective of Contemporary Regional Art of France, and the project of Atelier Cândido Chuva Gomes, Levada de Tomar. Regarding the conception of the structure thought for the auditoriums, an analysis of the potentialities of the underground architecture is carried out, in order to enhance and respect the pre-existences and the landscape. A study of the possible forms and distributions of the spaces, took place, where was opted for the orthogonal form influenced by the sculptor Eduardo Chillida. A study of light was also carried out, in which the main influence for the light openings, thought for the project, was the work of the Architect Peter Zumthor, the Thermal Baths in Vals. Finally, an underground work is analyzed, the project of the Architect Nuno Ribeiro Lopes, the Center of Volcanic Interpretation of Capelinhos, which contains the presence of a pre-existence lighthouse.
