Abstract: | A União Europeia exigiu que as sociedades cotadas aplicassem as normas internacionais de
pertencendo a Portugal, Espanha, Luxemburgo, Reino Unido e Bélgica as principais variações
registadas.
In 2005 International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) were adopted in the consolidated accounts of listed European Union companies. The accounting remeasurements as issued by the international standards led to an average shareholders’ equity decrease of 3% and an average increase of profit and loss statement reported of 1% by the biggest Financial European Institutions. The major variations occurred in Portugal, Spain, Luxembourg, United Kingdom and Belgium. The identification of the transition faced by these Institutions through the international accounting standards, as well as the share of the experiences related to the difficulties incurred, is helpful for the societies who are now stepping forward harmonisation and preparing the application of the IFRS. The evidence obtained in this study shows that the transition adjustments registered by the first time adopters of IFRS had different signals and directions, even when answering the demand made by the same international standard, by Institutions hosted in the same country. The identification of one national transition adjustment pattern became harder as there were different behaviours within national Institutions. The accounting standards related to the recognition and measurement of financial instruments had a material effect in all sample Institutions shareholders’ equity. The business combination standards affected about 81% of the profit and loss sample countries. There are two accounting systems, just as identified by Callao and Jarne (1995), anticipating the trajectory towards accounting convergence as registered by the Financial Institutions in European Union: the one composed by continental and anglo-saxon countries and the one composed by countries who relied on Financial Institutions as the main source of financial support. |
