In the second half of the twentieth century, the phenomenon of globalization made it possible to shorten distances between borders. As a result, tourism has had a growth boom. Portugal also saw a growth in the tourism sector, especially reflecting the increase in registered demand from non-residents. In the last decade, the city of Lisbon has become one of the most visited city breaks in Europe. However, the increase in the number of tourists in the municipality, according to the City Council, was followed by an increase in expenses associated with the management of the county. In order to counteract the increase in expenditure, it was considered that the best tool to obtain revenue would be the application of the Municipal Tourist Tax. The present work aims to analyze the application of the municipal tourist tax in the municipality of Lisbon and to assess its efficiency through the analysis of the projected results with the application of this tax. The results show the increase in expenses of the municipality is strongly related to the increase in the number of tourists. It was also possible to verify that the application of the tax had no negative influence on the tourist demand as well as the revenue obtained helps to finance a large part of the expenses with tourism. |
