Referring to the technological innovation concept, the diffusion of innovations models and the user’s configuration problem, the following research has as main purpose understanding the reasons behind technological changes and how these changes interfere and alter the buying experience on retail customers. To answer this goal, one tried to understand the customer’s adherence to the technological innovation and degree of satisfaction, and the top contributor factors to this satisfaction. One also tried to identify the profile-type of the customer who chooses, and the one that doesn’t chooses, this innovative way of buying and the indicators that define these profiles. The research looked to identify the reasons that lead, from the retailer side, to the implementation of the technological innovation, as well as understand the implementation process adopted. The technological innovation chosen as case study for this research was the self-checkout machines implemented by the Auchan Group on its Jumbo chain retail stores. These machines allow the customer to self register their own bought goods and to choose the way of payment. The data collection techniques used were: the self-completion questionnaire applied to the users and non-users of the technological innovation in question; a structuralized interview, applied to the technological innovation responsible; secondary data analysis and in loco observation of the self-checkout machines. |
