Serão as crianças igualmente felizes?: o papel da etnia, sexo e ano escolar no bem-estar subjetivo em crianças e adolescentes

Abstract

Nos últimos anos, têm merecido particular atenção estudos que procuram comparar o bem-estar subjetivo de crianças em diferentes países, recorrendo-se a instrumentos comuns que permitam essa comparação. O presente trabalho visa avaliar o bem-estar subjetivo de crianças e adolescentes a residir em Portugal, em função da sua etnia, sexo e ano escolar, com recurso ao instrumento elaborado pelo Children’s Worlds – International Survey of Children Well-Being. Para o efeito, foi conduzido um estudo quantitativo com 331 crianças brancas e negras, de 3.º (N=56), 5.º (N=142) e 7.º (N=133) anos de escolaridade de escolas públicas da área metropolitana de Lisboa. Os resultados indicam que, em termos gerais, a etnia influencia todas as dimensões de bem-estar consideradas (bem-estar familiar, material, relacional, ligado às relações interpessoais, associados à segurança e satisfação com a zona de residência, e bem-estar em contexto escolar), sendo que são as crianças negras, por comparação com as brancas, as que percecionam menores níveis de bem-estar. Em geral, são as crianças mais novas que expressam menor bem-estar, no entanto, este efeito é habitualmente acompanhado por um efeito de interação com a etnia (são as crianças mais novas, negras, aquelas que expressam menor bem-estar). Verifica-se também a existência de um efeito de interação entre etnia e sexo no sentido em que mostra que são as meninas negras que expressam menor bem-estar relacional. Os dados serão discutidos à luz das teorias existentes sobre esta temática.

In the recent years, have received particular attention studies that pretend to compare the subjective well-being of children in different countries, resorting to common tools to this comparison. The present study, aims to assess the subjective well-being of children and adolescents living in Portugal, according to their ethnicity, gender and school year, using the instrument developed by the Children's Worlds - International Survey of Children Well-Being. To this end, a quantitative study was conducted with 331 black and white children from 3rd (N = 56), 5th (N = 142) and 7th (N = 133) years of education, of public schools, in Lisbon metropolitan area. The results indicate that, in general terms, ethnicity influences all dimensions of well-being considered (family well-being, material, relational, connected to interpersonal relationships, safety and satisfaction associated with area of residence, and well-being in schools), and are black children, compared with white, those who present lower levels of well-being. In general, younger children are those who express lower well-being, however, this effect is usually accompanied by an interaction effect with ethnicity (are younger, black children, those who express lower well-being). There is also the existence of an interaction effect between ethnicity and gender in that it shows that black girls are expressing less relational well-being.
