Arquitetura religiosa: reflexões em torno do espaço religioso no século XXI

Abstract

A arquitetura religiosa possui uma história milenar que não pode ser esquecida na realização da prática de projeto, sendo a história da arquitetura essencial para o processo arquitetónico do espaço religioso. O cenário do exercício lançado na vertente prática de Projeto Final de Arquitetura – Igreja, Complexo Paroquial e Social da Portela -, permitiu a reflexão e interrogação sobre o espaço religioso no 3º milénio, só conseguida com o auxílio da história da arquitetura religiosa, que se torna uma ferramenta do projeto arquitetónico. Os espaços religiosos seguiram linhas de pensamento comuns através dos séculos e procuraram ambientes característicos, levando a que este se tornasse atemporal, nomeadamente no que diz respeito ao seu simbolismo. A Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima, do Arquiteto Porfírio Pardal Monteiro é imagem dessa continuidade, que apesar da sua inovação, era um projeto não revolucionário pela atemporalidade do espaço religioso. Todos os projetos, desde os primórdios da arquitetura religiosa, procuraram dar resposta às necessidades litúrgicas e às necessidades globais de cada época, sendo que a arquitetura religiosa contemporânea não é diferente. Assim, o espaço religioso no 3º milénio deve procurar responder às diligências litúrgicas defendidas no Concilio do Vaticano II, procurando dar continuidade aos elementos atemporais como a luz e o centro simbólico. Existem assim elementos e preocupações arquitetónicas atemporais no pensamento sobre o espaço religioso, que ultrapassam mudanças estilísticas e litúrgicas. Não existe um modelo do espaço religioso do século XXI, mas existem sim matrizes que podem ser seguidas na procura por um espaço que responda às necessidades da igreja. As diligências e matrizes não condicionam o projeto de arquitetura mas completam-no.

Religious architecture possesses a millenia-old history which cannot be forgotten whenever a project is being created, since the history of the architecture is crucial for the architectonic process of the religious space. The scenario proposed within the exercise for the practical part of the Final Project of Architecture - Church, Parish and Social Complex of Portela -, allowed a careful reflection about the religious space in the third millennium, solely achieved with the aid of religious architecture history which therefore becomes a tool of the architectural project. The religious spaces have followed prevailing guidelines through the centuries and searched for characteristic environments leading these to be atemporal, especially concerning their symbolism. The Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima , projected by the architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, is the living image of that continuity as it reveals itself a non-revolutionary project due to the atemporal characteristics of a religious space, in spite of its clear innovation. Every project since the early days of religious architecture have pursued answers to the liturgical needs as well as to the main necessities of each time, and the same also applies to the contemporary religious architecture. Thereby the religious space in the third millennium should respond to the liturgical diligences set on the Vatican Council II, searching the continuity of timeless elements like the light and the symbolic center. Therefore on the conception of the religious space there are timeless elements and architectural concerns that go beyond any liturgical or stylistic changes. Finally there is not a set model for the religious space of the 21st century but matrixes which can serve as guidelines in the search for a space that fills the church’s necessities. In spite of one might think, these diligences and matrixes do not condition the architectural project, they actually complete it.
