In this thesis we research the connection between social classes and party voting in legislative elections and at the national, county and local level. The country we study is Portugal. This connection constitutes an important part of sociology. This thematic has different perspectives. There is an intrinsic relationship between democracy and elections conducted according to party lines. We enquire if there is a relationship between social classes and the vote according to specific political parties and according to the political left and the political right. In the definition of social classes we use a class tipology that uses socioprofessional variables. There are important issues that are connected to our study. Those issues are called the dealignement thesis and the realignement thesis. The dealignement thesis supports the disappearance of relationships between classes and the vote. The realignement thesis supports that this relation is changing in a profound way. We could find connections between social classes and party voting at the national, county and local level. The local level is crucial for the understanding of the connection between the variables we use because it shows clearer class voting patterns. |
