Bem-estar subjetivo e seus determinantes: A realidade Portuguesa e de alguns países da União Europeia nos anos 2000

Abstract

A partir de 2000, economistas e psicólogos voltam ainteressar-se sobre o que determina o bem-estar subjetivo dos cidadãos. Vários estudos transnacionais foram realizados neste sentido. O presente estudo visa compreender o que determinou o bem-estar subjetivo em Portugal e em alguns países da União Europeia (EU) entre 2002 e 2010 e como se caracterizou o bem-estar subjetivo dos portugueses nos anos após o despoletar da crise económica e financeira. Para tal, analisaram-se os dados de bem-estar subjetivo de mais de 140000 participantes de 15 estados-membros da UE, incluindo Portugal, provenientes do European Social Surveye os indicadores macroeconómicos proporcionados pelo Eurostat. Os resultados revelam que o bem-estar subjetivo de europeus e portugueses é influenciado pelas flutuações macroeconómicas. A perceção dos indivíduos sobre o seu estado geral de saúde e sobre a adequação dos seus rendimentos às despesas correntes, assim como as confianças social e institucional revelaram-se determinantes do bem-estar subjetivo, tal como vários fatores sociodemográficos. No entanto, em Portugal nem todos os fatores sociodemográficos identificados para os restantes países e já observados em estudos anteriores foram determinantes. A peculiaridade portuguesa torna-se mais evidente quando se observa que em 2010 a média de bem-estar subjetivo é superior a 2008, verificando-se o mesmo com a confiança social, tal levanta a hipótese de em tempos de crise económica os cidadãos nacionais desvalorizarem mais os aspetos materiais e darem mais importância aos relacionais.

Since the beginning of 2000, economists and psychologists got a renewed interested on what determines citizens’ subjective well-being. Severaltransnational studies have been conducted in this direction. The present study intends to understand what determined subjective well-being in Portugal and in some other European Union (EU) countries between 2002 and 2010 and what characterized subjective well-being in Portugal in the years after the beginning of the economic and financial crisis. For that, subjective well-being data from the European Social Survey from more than 140000 participants from 15 EU countries, including Portugal, and macroeconomic indicators from the Eurostat were analyzed. The results evidence that Europeans and Portugueses’ subjective well-being isinfluenced by macroeconomic variations. The individual's perception concerning their general health and the adequacy of their income when facing current expenses, as well as social and institutional trust evidenced as determinants of subjective well-being. Several socio-demographic factors showed to influence subjective well-being, however, it seems that some of the factors identified for the rest of the countries and observed in previous studies were not determinants in Portugal. The Portuguese idiosyncrasy becomes even clearer when we notice that in 2010 subjective well-being in Portugal is higher than in 2008, as well as social trust, which may indicate that in periods of economic crisis Portuguese citizens devalue more material aspects and highlight relational aspects.
