Eu gosto muito do meu filho mas… Parentalidades entre o desejo e a realidade

Abstract

As profundas transformações sociais ocorridas na Europa levam à existência de novas definições e novos moldes da relação entre trabalho e família, que apontam para a existência de uma maior igualdade de género e de uma maior participação do homem na família. No entanto, coexistem práticas tradicionais relativas aos papéis de género, que levam a maior parte das mulheres a assumir a realização das tarefas domésticas e dos cuidados com as crianças.

A partir da análise de entrevistas aprofundadas realizadas em Lisboa, no Porto e em Leiria, a casais com diferentes durações de casamento e diferentes pertenças sociais, procura-se incidir sobre os significados que a parentalidade adquire, para homens e mulheres. Entre outros aspectos, analisa-se as alterações ocorridas com o nascimento dos filhos, o significado do ser-se pai e mãe, a educação dos filhos, os conflitos ou as preocupações que estes trazem.

The profound social changes that have been taking place in Europe have led to new definitions and new forms of the work-family relationship that point towards greater gender equality and greater participation in the family by men. However, coexisting with these transformations are traditional gender-role practices that lead most women to accept responsibility for household chores and childcare.

On the basis of an analysis of in-depth interviews held in Lisbon, Oporto and Leiria with couples from different social backgrounds and with marriages of differing lengths of time, an attempt is made to focus on the meanings that parenthood acquires for men and women. Among other aspects, an analysis is carried out of the changes arising since the birth of the children, the meaning of being a father or mother, the children's upbringing, and the conflicts and worries that they occasion.
