Pequenos reis e grandes honras culto, poder e estatuto na Índia ocidental

Abstract

O presente estudo toma como ponto de partida a constituição ideológica das chamadas comunidades aldeãs da região de Goa (Índia Ocidental). Articulando materiais arquivísticos e impressos com fontes históricas relativas a outros pontos do sul da península, o estudo procura explorar o processo diacrónico de erosão dos suportes materiais destas instituições para depois abordar, de uma perspectiva sincrónica, o problema da resiliência das estruturas de autoridade que lhes estão anexas. Materiais etnográficos recolhidos na chamada região das Novas Conquistas de Goa são confrontados com dados relativos a outros contextos do subcontinente para tentar situar algumas estruturas rituais da região de estudo no âmbito de idiomas de autoridade fundados nas teorias clássicas do sacrifício. O enfoque na constituição ritual das chefaturas aldeãs não só permite abordar o tema da secularização da função real sob uma perspectiva distinta daquela a que a etnografia indianista nos habituou como obriga a reconsiderar o problema da diferenciação estatutária à luz de um modelo relacional que não é redutível à imagem de uma relação vertical entre puro e impuro. A exploração da constituição territorial do estatuto revela formas dinâmicas de diferenciação definidas pelos idiomas da honra e do serviço, desenhando relações fluidas de proximidade face ao divino que podem ser reconduzidas a modelos ideológicos de soberania. Tais idiomas permitem, por seu turno, uma reavaliação do problema das proeminências rituais das castas baixas no âmbito de uma estrutura de privilégio que não pode ser reduzida ao estatuto de um discurso heterodoxo ou contracultural.

This dissertation takes the ideological formation of the so-called village communities in the region of Goa (Western India) as its starting point. By articulating printed and archival materials with historical sources on other areas of the Indian peninsula, it explores the diachronic processes leading to the disintegration of their material foundations in order to address, from a synchronic perspective, the problems posed by the resilience of the structures of authority that underlie them. Ethnographic data collected in the so-called New Conquests area of Goa are articulated with materials from other Indian contexts so as to locate some of the region’s ritual structures within the framework of authority idioms that are predicated on classical theories of sacrifice. The focus on the ritual constitution of village chieftainships not only allows for an approach on the issue of the secularization of kingship which is dissonant with standard anthropological readings on the subject, but also forces one to reconsider the problem of status differentiation in light of a relational model that cannot be accomodated within the topos of a vertical relationship between purity and impurity. Exploring the territorial formation of status reveals dynamic forms of differentiation, defined by notions of honor and service, which can be read as translations of ideological models of sovereignty. Such idioms in turn allow us to reconsider the problem of the ritual preeminence of lower castes within the framework of a privilege structure that cannot be reduced to the condition of a countercultural or heterodox discourse.
