The challenge faced by those who study agriculture and (the) rural world is that of redefining their terms, a redefinition that assumes the central role that the environmental questions take in the contemporary societies. Among the lines of research that give a contribution for such redefinition, it has been adopted that of the articulation among agriculture, rurality and environment. Its social relevance is large inasmuch as it contemplates the topics and problems related to the inception and application of the public policies pertaining to the agricultural sector and the rural world. This thesis aims at analyzing the relationship between agriculture and rurality in today’s Portugal, as well as enumerating and questioning the main problems that nowadays face the sustainable development of the rural territories. It is argued that the situation of the agricultural sector and the rural world in Portugal can be the basis of a set of “comparative advantages” for new strategies of their development. In addition to the introduction and the conclusion, the thesis is structured in six chapters. In the first two chapters, a revision of the literature and the placing in context of the research is made, while in the remaining chapters an empiric analysis is performed. After presenting the features of the main sectors of agriculture before Portugal joined the EEC and at the outset of the 21st century, an analysis is made of the sector of pluriactive agriculture and of the application of the first agro-environmental measures through two case studies: one pertaining to traditional agriculture and the other pertaining to intensive agriculture. The conclusion is drawn that the preservation of agricultural activity is crucial for the sustainable development of a large part of the rural territories of Portugal. |
