A implementação do Uniform System of Accounts for the lodging Industry num grupo hoteleiro em Portugal

Abstract

A existência de adequados sistemas de informação para gestão é considerada fundamental para apoiar os gestores e diretores nas suas decisões em vista a atingir os objectivos e a assegurar a competitividade das empresas. No caso particular do sector da Hotelaria, um dos sistemas de informação mais utilizados é o Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI). O presente trabalho tem por objectivo enquadrar o USALI na temática geral das necessidades de informação de apoio à decisão, identificar as suas características, descrever a sua aplicação numa situação real de um grupo hoteleiro português – Grupo Porto Bay, comparar o USALI teórico com o USALI aplicado no Grupo, e avaliar o grau de satisfação dos diretores face ao desempenho deste sistema. Para atingir estes objectivos, foram efetuadas entrevistas semiestruturadas aos responsáveis pelos departamentos mais importantes, no sentido de analisar e perceber o USALI implementado no Grupo Porto Bay e também a quatro diretores do Grupo. Após a análise dos dados recolhidos, concluímos que o Grupo Porto Bay potenciou a utilização do sistema em seu benefício. Para o efeito, optou por utilizar um determinado número de departamentos e adaptou todo o sistema à sua realidade, de forma a corresponder às suas necessidades específicas. Verificámos por último que todos os diretores entrevistados consideram o USALI o sistema mais adequado à situação do Grupo, e apresentam um elevado grau de satisfação face à ferramenta em questão, apesar de apontarem algumas insuficiências.

The existence of proper information systems for management is considered fundamental to support managers and directors in making decisions to achieve their objectives and ensure business competitiveness. In the hospitality sector, one of the most used information system is the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI). The purpose of this project is to put USALI in the general theme of information needs, in order to support the decision making process, identify its characteristics and describe its application in a real life situation of a Portuguese hospitality group – Grupo Porto Bay. Based on information made available to us, we could compare the theoretical USALI with the USALI designed for the group and assess the director’s satisfaction levels with the system’s performance. In order to achieve these goals, we conducted semi-structured interviews with those responsible for the major departments. Our goal was to analyze and understand USALI’s implementation in the Porto Bay Group as well as the four directors. After analyzing the collected data we can conclude that the Porto Bay Group has efficiently used the system to their advantage. To achieve their specific needs they defined the relevant departments and adapted the whole system to their reality. Lastly, we verified that all the directors that were interviewed found that the USALI was the most appropriate system for their group. Even though they found some insufficiencies, they showed a high level of satisfaction with the system’s performance.
