Abstract: | A década de 90 marcou o progressivo aumento do investimento directo português no exterior,
analisar os factores determinantes do investimento directo estrangeiro sob diferentes
perspectivas.
investimento directo português no exterior, focando especialmente o impacte linguístico e
The 90s marked the progressive increase in the Portuguese direct investment abroad due to the globalization process. With this background the Portuguese companies had to face competition, not only within their own country, but also foreign competitors and thus compete with international companies on foreign markets. It is in this period that foreign direct investment in the Portuguese economy is most evidently heard of. Since 1997, the PFDI increased progressively in response to the increasing globalization of markets and the increased potential for expansion of Portuguese companies. On a worldwide level there have been important studies on this topic, seeking to analyze the determinants of foreign direct investment by different perspectives. In Portugal this is a relatively recent phenomenon, so far the subject has not been extensively studied. However, there have been some incipient scientific studies, articles and even themes in master's thesis. The purpose of this study is to develop an analysis on the determinants of Portuguese direct investment abroad, with particular focus on the linguistic and cultural impact of investments in Portugal. Analyzing the period after 1997 until 2007, we studied the tendencies of Portuguese FDI to identify the internal factors of the investment receiving countries that determine the PFDI. The main conclusion of this study is that the main countries that tend to attract the Portuguese investment are countries that share a likeness in terms of culture, particularly countries with a common language or that are very similar, as is the case of Spanish. |
