Modernidade, classes sociais e cidadania política: Portugal numa perspectiva transnacional

Abstract

Argumenta-se neste trabalho que a relação entre classes sociais e cidadania política é um ele-mento central na constituição e entendimento da Modernidade, uma vez que permite observar como se estabelecem formas diferenciadas de poder e de influência na relação entre cidadãos e instituições. A partir dos dados do European Social Survey de 2002 e colocando Portugal no centro de uma análise transnacional, procura-se perceber quais as especificidades deste país na relação acima indicada face à Europa. Esta análise efectua-se em duas fases: (1) identifica-ção da estrutura de classes e padrões de cidadania política, com o mapeamento da relação entre estas variáveis; (2) combinação de duas dimensões teoricamente fundamentadas de cidadania política em que sobressaem 4 perfis de cidadãos, que estabelecem formas diferen-ciadas de relação com as instituições: apolíticos excluídos, votantes passivos, activos não politizados e activistas mobilizados. Da relação entre classes sociais e cidadania política emergem padrões diferenciados na Europa. Portugal destaca-se pela acentuada contraposição entre detentores de capital cultural (PTE) e as restantes classes.

In this work, it is argued that the relationship between social classes and political citizenship is central in the understanding of modernity, establishing different forms of power and influ-ence in the relationship between citizens and institutions. Using European Social Survey data from 2002 and placing Portugal in the center of a European cross-country analysis, we seek to understand the specificity of this country in the above relationship. The analysis is divided in two phases: (1) identification of class structure and patterns of political citizenship and the relationship between these two variables; (2) combination of two theoretically grounded di-mensions of political citizenship resulting in four citizens profiles, each one corresponding to different forms of relating with institutions: excluded non-political, passive voters, not politi-cized activists and mobilized activists. Different patterns emerge from the relationship be-tween social classes and political citizenship in Europe. In Portugal there is a sharp contrast between holders of cultural capital (PM) and the remaining social classes.
