De mão dada na dor : Influência do suporte social e das estratégias de coping no ajustamento à doença em pais/cuidadores de crianças com cancro

Abstract

O cancro pediátrico tem implicações ao nível social, psicológico e físico, obrigando a diversas adaptações por parte da criança que é alvo de diagnóstico, mas também da sua família (Fletcher, 2010). Revela-se por isso, profundamente importante perceber a maneira como os cuidadores se adaptam a esta problemática (Santos, 1998). O objetivo principal desta dissertação é perceber a relação entre o suporte social percebido e as estratégias de coping utilizadas no ajustamento à doença por parte dos cuidadores de crianças com cancro. Participaram neste estudo 32 cuidadores, maioritariamente do sexo feminino (81.5%). Para avaliar o suporte social percebido foi utilizado o Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), a variável coping foi medida através do Coping Health Inventory for Parents- Brief Version (CHIP-BF) e por fim, para medir o ajustamento à doença foi utilizado o Pediatric Inventory for Parents (PIP). Os resultados demonstraram que a fonte mais identificada como recurso de suporte social é a família (M=4.39. Verificaram-se correlações significativas entre o suporte recebido por um parceiro e o ajustamento familiar, de cuidados médicos e de comunicação; entre o coping baseado na crença e na confiança e as mesmas dimensões de ajustamento à doença; entre o ajustamento relacionado com os cuidados médicos e entre o coping baseado na relação conjugal e no envolvimento familiar. Em suma, o estudo reforça a importância de compreender o papel do suporte social e das estratégias de coping na adaptação dos cuidadores à doença, integrando os pressupostos do Modelo Transacional de Stress (Folkman & Lazarus, 1980).

Paediatric cancer has social, psychological and physical implications, requiring various adjustments on the part of the child who is diagnosed, but also on the part of their family (Fletcher, 2010). It is therefore extremely important to understand how carers adapt to this problem (Santos, 1998). The main objective of this dissertation is to understand the relationship between perceived social support and the coping strategies used by caregivers of children with cancer to adjust to the disease. Thirty-two caregivers participated in this study, most of whom were female (81.5%). The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) was used to assess perceived social support, the coping variable was measured using the Coping Health Inventory for Parents- Brief Version (CHIP-BF) and, finally, the Pediatric Inventory for Parents (PIP) was used to measure adjustment to the disease. The results showed that the most identified source as a social support resource is the family (M=4.39). Significant correlations were found between the support received from a partner and family adjustment, medical care, and communication; between coping based on belief and trust and the same dimensions of adjustment to the disease; between adjustment related to medical care and coping based on marital relationship and family involvement. In summary, the study reinforces the importance of understanding the role of social support and coping strategies in caregivers' adaptation to the disease, integrating the assumptions of the Transactional Model of Stress (Folkman & Lazarus, 1980).
