Political instability in 2024 portrayed in the periodical press: Le Monde as a case study

Abstract

This dissertation offers a thorough analysis of the media during a period of Political Instability. Through the bias of the media, Le Monde, this work will assess how the political instability in France has impacted the media, thus impacting the key concept of neutrality among the media. The year 2024 for France has been marked by the turbulence of the Fifth Republic, due to Emmanuel Macron’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly. Thus generating an intense debate over the legitimacy of democracy, whether it regards the media or the government. Through the guidance of Media Framing and Political Parallelism, this dissertation will use the headlines of Le Monde to reveal how framing strategies shaped public understanding of the crisis. Then, this study will be focused on an exploratory survey of eighty respondents with the aim of capturing the audience's perception of the media, neutrality, and influence over politics. This research identifies a significant temporal and thematic gap in academic literature. Despite the gravity of the 2024 instability, scholarly attention remains limited. By combining research on Le Monde and this subject, where there is insufficient academic work, the dissertation contributes to one of the earliest empirical studies of Le Monde’s coverage of this crisis.

Esta dissertação oferece uma análise aprofundada da mídia durante um período de instabilidade política. Através do viés do jornal Le Monde, este trabalho avaliará como a instabilidade política na França impactou a mídia, afetando assim o conceito-chave de neutralidade entre os meios de comunicação. O ano de 2024 para a França foi marcado pela turbulência da Quinta República, devido à decisão de Emmanuel Macron de dissolver a Assembleia Nacional. Isso gerou um intenso debate sobre a legitimidade da democracia, seja em relação à mídia ou ao governo. Com base nas orientações do Media Framing e do Paralelismo Político, esta dissertação utilizará as manchetes do Le Monde para revelar como as estratégias de enquadramento moldaram a compreensão pública da crise. Em seguida, este estudo se concentrará em uma pesquisa exploratória com oitenta entrevistados, com o objetivo de captar a percepção do público sobre a mídia, a neutralidade e a influência sobre a política. Esta investigação identifica uma lacuna temporal e temática significativa na literatura académica. Apesar da gravidade da instabilidade de 2024, a atenção académica continua limitada. Ao combinar a investigação sobre o Le Monde e este assunto, onde há trabalho académico insuficiente, a dissertação contribui com um dos primeiros estudos empíricos sobre a cobertura do Le Monde desta crise.
