Socially responsible investments in Portugal: Knowledge, trends and challenges

Abstract

For many years, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies have been defined by the international business community across various sectors of the economy, including banking, retail organizations, public services, and private providers. More and more companies value the role of CSR and want to engage in positive social actions and communicate them to their stakeholders The financial sector has always played a crucial role in sustainable finance and sustainable development, as it helps allocate resources to the most effective projects, including sustainable investments and companies. This work aims to clarify the nature of socially responsible investment and explain its fundamentals, including the various forms of this type of investment, recent trends, and different valuation approaches. Thus, the starting question was posed: What is the degree of knowledge and investments of Portuguese investors in relation to socially responsible investments? The general objective is to determine the degree of knowledge and applications of Portuguese investors in relation to socially responsible investments. The study highlights that Portuguese investors show awareness of socially responsible investing, with organizations performing best when ESG principles and sustainability are embedded in top-level governance and strategy. This integration strengthens governance, credibility, and competitiveness, making long-term stakeholder trust more valuable than short-term financial returns.

Durante muitos anos, as estratégias de Responsabilidade Social Corporativa (CSR) têm sido definidas pela comunidade empresarial internacional em vários setores da economia, incluindo banca, organizações de retalho, serviços públicos e prestadores privados. Cada vez mais empresas valorizam o papel da CSR e procuram envolver ações sociais positivas, comunicando-as aos seus stakeholders. O setor financeiro sempre desempenhou um papel crucial nas finanças sustentáveis e no desenvolvimento sustentável, pois ajuda a direcionar recursos para os projetos mais eficazes, incluindo investimentos sustentáveis e empresas. Este trabalho procura clarificar a natureza dos investimentos socialmente responsáveis e explicar os seus fundamentos, incluindo as diversas formas deste tipo de investimento, as tendências recentes e as diferentes abordagens de valorização. Assim, foi colocada a questão de partida: Qual o grau de conhecimento e de investimento dos investidores portugueses em relação aos investimentos socialmente responsáveis? O objetivo geral é determinar o grau de conhecimento e de aplicação dos investidores portugueses relativamente aos investimentos socialmente responsáveis. O estudo evidencia que os investidores portugueses demonstram consciência sobre este tipo de investimento, sendo que as organizações apresentam melhor desempenho quando os princípios de ESG e a sustentabilidade estão incorporados na governação e na estratégia de topo. Esta integração reforça a credibilidade, a competitividade e a confiança dos stakeholders a longo prazo, revelando-se mais valiosa do que os retornos financeiros de curto prazo.
