Do espaço urbano ao espaço online : A Sirigaita, o Instagram e a arte de resistir simbolicamente no Intendente

Abstract

Os estudos em ciências sociais e urbanas definem a gentrificação enquanto fenómeno que transcende o domínio económico, envolvendo transformações sociais, perdas culturais e emocionais que geram sentimentos de desenraizamento e perda de pertença. Por seu lado, a resistência urbana pode ser entendida como um conjunto de práticas simbólicas, discursivas e materiais que procuram contrariar tais dinâmicas. Neste contexto, o presente estudo debruça-se sobre a associação cultural alternativa sem fins lucrativos Sirigaita, localizada no Intendente (Lisboa), explorando como articula práticas de resistência simbólica através do Instagram, rede social online de maior uso entre os jovens portugueses. A investigação seguiu uma abordagem mista: numa primeira fase, foram analisados quantitativamente 376 posts publicados entre janeiro de 2023 e junho de 2025; posteriormente, na fase qualitativa, recorreu-se à Análise Temática, emergindo como eixo central as narrativas anti-despejo. Os resultados evidenciam que a presença online constitui elemento central da ação da Sirigaita, articulando contranarrativas que afirmam o bairro como espaço de encontro, solidariedade e memória coletiva, em oposição à mercantilização crescente. O Instagram surge, simultaneamente, como vitrine digital, arquivo de resistência e ferramenta de mobilização. A volatilidade da atenção online expõe, porém, a fragilidade destas práticas. O contributo central reside em demonstrar empiricamente, através da Sirigaita enquanto estudo de caso, que a gentrificação é um processo material, simbólico e político, no qual a disputa por representações urbanas molda o direito à cidade. Conclui-se que a amplificação digital no Instagram sustenta práticas concretas de mobilização, ampliando a compreensão da resistência simbólica em contextos de gentrificação.

Studies in social and urban sciences define gentrification as a phenomenon that transcends the economic domain, encompassing social transformations alongside cultural and emotional losses that generate feelings of displacement and loss of belonging. In turn, urban resistance can be understood as a set of symbolic, discursive, and material practices that seek to counteract such dynamics. Within this framework, the present study focuses on Sirigaita, a non-profit alternative cultural association located in Intendente (Lisbon), exploring how it articulates practices of symbolic resistance through Instagram, the most widely used online social network among Portuguese youth. The research adopted a mixed- methods approach: in the first phase, 376 posts published between January 2023 and June 2025 were quantitatively analyzed; subsequently, in the qualitative phase, Thematic Analysis was employed, with anti-eviction narratives emerging as the central axis. The findings reveal that online presence constitutes a core element of Sirigaita’s action, articulating counter-narratives that reassert the neighborhood as a space of encounter, solidarity, and collective memory, in opposition to growing commodification. Instagram emerges, simultaneously, as a digital showcase, an archive of resistance, and a tool for mobilization. Nonetheless, the volatility of online attention exposes the fragility of these practices. The study’s main contribution lies in empirically demonstrating, through the case of Sirigaita, that gentrification is a material, symbolic, and political process in which the dispute over urban representations shapes the right to the city. It concludes that digital amplification on Instagram sustains concrete mobilization practices, thereby expanding the understanding of symbolic resistance in contexts of gentrification.
