O papel da música em contextos de refúgio: Um estudo de caso com o Afghanistan National Institute of Music em Portugal

Abstract

A presente dissertação se propõe a analisar como a música pode atuar em contextos de refúgio mais estáveis, revelando-se como uma prática artística multidimensional, capaz de transitar por diferentes esferas da vida dos refugiados. Embora se observe um crescimento no número de investigações que exploram as interconexões entre migração e arte, ainda há poucas pesquisas que investigam o papel específico da música e, particularmente, com uma abordagem holística que articula, em um mesmo estudo, aspectos sociais, culturais, emocionais e políticos. Assim, adotando como desenho da pesquisa um estudo de caso com os membros do Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM), refugiados em Portugal, esta dissertação utilizou como métodos de pesquisa a observação não participante e a entrevista semiestruturada para que, posteriormente, os dados fossem analisados pela técnica da Análise Temática Reflexiva. Com os resultados, então, organizados em seis temas, tornou-se evidente que a música no ANIM atua como um elo cultural que salvaguarda as tradições afegãs e, simultaneamente, facilita um diálogo com a cultura local. Ademais, evidenciou-se que, para além de fomentar a integração sociocultural com a sociedade receptora, a música também atua como suporte para o bem-estar emocional desses jovens afegãos, enquanto, paralelamente, amplia a agência e o protagonismo artístico dos mesmos. Por fim, no contexto de refúgio em Portugal, a música no ANIM tem sua esfera política ampliada, dando voz a esses refugiados e confirmando-se, finalmente, como uma ferramenta complexa e eficaz.

The present dissertation aims to analyze how music can function in more stable refugee contexts, revealing itself as a multidimensional artistic practice capable of permeating different spheres of refugees' lives. Although there has been an increase in the number of investigations exploring the interconnections between migration and art, there are still few studies that investigate the specific role of music and, particularly, with a holistic approach that articulates, in a single study, social, cultural, emotional, and political aspects. Thus, adopting a case study design with the members of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM), refugees in Portugal, this dissertation utilized non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews as research methods so that, subsequently, the data could be analyzed using the technique of Reflexive Thematic Analysis. With the results then organized into six themes, it became evident that music at ANIM acts as a cultural link that safeguards Afghan traditions and simultaneously facilitates a dialogue with the local culture. Moreover, it was evidenced that, in addition to fostering sociocultural integration with the host society, music also acts as support for the emotional well-being of these Afghan youth, while simultaneously enhancing their agency and artistic protagonism. Finally, in the context of refuge in Portugal, music in ANIM has its political sphere expanded, giving voice to these refugees and ultimately confirming itself as a complex and effective tool.
