Escola e desigualdades sociais em Portugal: Reprodução social e a (im)probabilidade de "fintar o destino"

Abstract

A presente tese tem como objetivo explorar a relação entre desigualdades sociais, organização das escolas e (in)sucesso escolar, compreendendo tanto como as desigualdades sociais se reproduzem por via da escola, como o papel que a instituição escolar pode assumir para manter, mitigar ou transformar essa desigualdade. Para tal, empregam-se diferentes análises, assentes em metodologias quantitativas, que permitem conhecer esta relação num universo de estudo alargado, composto por todos os estudantes matriculados no sistema de ensino público português no ano letivo 2018/19. Conclui-se que no sistema de ensino português se observa uma relação clara entre o (in)sucesso escolar e os capitais económicos e culturais de origem dos estudantes, classe social, origem migrante, sexo e regiões, operando-se a reprodução das desigualdades sociais por via da escola. No entanto, quando se analisam os fatores da organização escolar e o seu potencial para quebrar esta reprodução (dimensão de turma, modalidades, programa TEIP, recursos humanos), a sua relação com o insucesso escolar não é tão evidente, sendo em alguns casos inexistente. Deste modo, a escola não está desligada do contexto social envolvente, sendo os fatores sociais aqueles que beneficiam de uma primazia face aos restantes, salientando-se a reprodução das desigualdades sociais por via da escola. Ainda assim, e após a análise tanto dos fatores sociais como dos fatores de organização escolar, constata-se que parte dos fatores internos à escola tendem a configurar-se pouco relevantes para estudantes com recursos sociais mais vantajosos, mas importantes no caso de alunos com menor volume de capitais.

The present thesis aims to explore the relationship between social inequalities, school organization, and educational (un)success, examining both how social inequalities are reproduced through schools and the role that schools can play in maintaining, mitigating, or transforming these inequalities. To achieve this, the study employs various analyses grounded in quantitative methodologies, enabling an understanding of this relationship within a broad study universe consisting of all students enrolled in the Portuguese public education system during the 2018/19 academic year. The findings reveal a clear relationship in the Portuguese education system between (un)successful educational outcomes and students' economic and cultural capital, social class, migrant background, gender, and regional origin, demonstrating the reproduction of social inequalities through the school system. However, when examining the factors related to school organization and their potential to disrupt this reproduction (class size, courses, TEIP program, human resources), their relationship with educational failure is not as evident and, in some cases, nonexistent. Thus, schools are not isolated from their surrounding social context, with social factors taking precedence over others, emphasizing the reproduction of social inequalities through education. Nevertheless, after analyzing both social and school organizational factors, it is observed that some internal school factors tend to be less relevant for students with more advantageous social resources but become significant for students with fewer resources.
