A influência do turismo na transformação da relação dos residentes do distrito de Évora com o seu património cultural imaterial

Abstract

Este trabalho aborda as relações entre turismo, património cultural imaterial e a sua comunidade portadora. O distrito de Évora, no qual o Turismo Cultural assume um papel significativo nas dinâmicas locais, não tivesse a distinção da cidade de Évora como Património Mundial pela UNESCO, em 1986, alavancado a expansão do turismo na região a partir da década de noventa do século XX, foi um território particularmente adequado para o estudo destas relações. Procurou-se compreender o reconhecimento e os modos de relação dos residentes com o património cultural imaterial local, assim como as suas perceções quanto aos impactos do turismo no território, em particular na sua relação com o património cultural imaterial. De modo a enriquecer o conhecimento sobre este fenómeno e a enquadrar as perceções dos residentes na estratégia das instituições locais com intervenção direta no património cultural imaterial e no Turismo, foram auscultados agentes turísticos e culturais com conhecimento ou intervenção direta neste âmbito. Foram ainda objetivos a elaboração de recomendações a instituições turísticas e culturais locais e a compreensão dos impactos do turismo de património cultural imaterial, de um modo mais alargado, para territórios com características sociodemográficas semelhantes ao território em análise. Através de uma abordagem metodológica mista, que incluiu questionários e entrevistas com agentes regionais e locais com actuação nos domínios do turismo e da cultura, este estudo revela as perceções dos residentes sobre os impactos económicos e culturais do turismo no distrito de Évora, bem como preocupações sobre a perda de autenticidade e a "comodificação" de práticas tradicionais. O estudo conclui que, embora o turismo traga benefícios económicos evidentes, há um desafio crescente em equilibrar esses ganhos com a preservação da autenticidade cultural e da qualidade de vida dos residentes. A investigação oferece recomendações para uma gestão turística sustentável que envolva activamente as comunidades locais.

This study addresses the relationships between tourism, intangible cultural heritage and the communities that possess and transmit these assets. The Évora district, in which cultural tourism plays a significant role in local dynamics, would not have been distinguished as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 without the city of Évora's designation. This, in turn, led to an expansion of tourism in the region from the 1990s onwards. This district is particularly suited to the study of these relationships. The aim was to gain insight into how residents engage with and perceive the impact of intangible cultural heritage on their local community, particularly in relation to tourism. In order to enhance our understanding of this phenomenon and contextualize the perceptions of residents within the framework of local institutions with direct involvement in cultural heritage and tourism, we consulted with tourism and cultural agents who possess knowledge or experience in this field. Furthermore, the objective was to draft recommendations for local tourist and cultural institutions and to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of cultural heritage tourism on similar socio-demographic territories. Through a mixed methodological approach, which included questionnaires and interviews with regional and local agents working in the fields of tourism and culture, this study reveals residents' perceptions of the economic and cultural impacts of tourism in the Évora district, as well as concerns about the loss of authenticity and the “commodification” of traditional practices. The study concludes that while tourism brings clear economic benefits, there is a growing challenge in balancing these gains with preserving cultural authenticity and residents quality of life. The research offers recommendations for sustainable tourism management that actively involves local communities.
