EUA e RFA no processo de transição democrática em Portugal

Abstract

O 25 de abril de 1974 é, obviamente, um dos acontecimentos mais relevantes na história portuguesa, estendendo a sua importância e o seu impacto para além de Portugal. A própria revolução e o período de transição que se seguiu marcou bastante não só a nível nacional, como internacional, com vários países e atores políticos a entenderem a magnitude das possíveis mudanças políticas, sociais e económicas que ocorreram no país europeu, como também a influência que as mesmas poderiam ter no resto do mundo. Analisar o que se passou neste período tão conturbado da história portuguesa, tanto antes da revolução, mas especialmente após a mesma é de enorme significância histórica, não só para entender a situação política portuguesa, mas também perceber como a mesma se insere num sistema internacional de equilíbrio de poderes. A tese irá assim analisar os momentos quentes no seguimento do 25 de abril e as reações estrangeiras ao mesmo. É nesta reação estrangeira aos acontecimentos mais relevantes em Portugal, mais concretamente por parte dos Estados Unidos da América e da República Federal Alemã, que o grosso da investigação será feita, focando-se na forma como os mesmos vão entender os diferentes momentos ao longo do processo de transição, que duraria até 1976.

The Carnation Revolution is one of the most relevant events in Portuguese history, extending its importance and impact beyond Portugal. The revolution itself and the period of transition that followed it had a great impact, not only on a national but also international level, with several countries and political actors understanding the extent of possible political, social and economic changes that occurred in the European country, as well as the influence they could have on the rest of the world. Analyzing what happened during such an unsettled period of Portuguese history, both before but especially after it, has an enormous historic value, not only to understand the Portuguese political situation but also to understand how it fits into an international system of balance of powers. This thesis will analyze the heated moments following the Carnation Revolution and the corresponding international reactions to it. It is on these foreign reactions to the most relevant episodes in Portugal, more specifically from the United States of America and the German Federal Republic, that the majority of the investigation will be accomplished, focusing on how they will perceive the different moments throughout the transition process that would last until 1976.
