In a fast-evolving world, financial matters become increasingly relevant and complex, especially regarding asset management and its proper valuation. This study, focused on the Portuguese market, seeks to understand the interaction between Value-for-Money (VfM) and investment funds, providing a comprehensive view of the efficiency and effectiveness of these instruments in the Portuguese financial market. Among the core issues investigated in this study the following points are raised: (1) identifying which products offer a good and poor VfM; (2) unveiling the factors influencing this metric; and (3) analyzing differences in VfM between investment funds focused on ESG criteria and those without ESG criteria. The analysis revealed a weak, but positive, correlation between profitability and current expense rates, suggesting that funds with higher returns might, in some cases, incur higher costs. However, this relationship isn't consistent, emphasizing the need for individual evaluation of each fund. On the other hand, the relationship between profitability and risk did not prove as linear, challenging the traditional trade-off principle between profitability and risk. Upon examining specific funds, it was discovered that funds such as BPI América, IMGA Ações América, and Caixa Ações Líderes Globais stand out positively with good VfM, while others, like Santander Ações América, proved less appealing in terms of VfM. Revealingly, funds guided by ESG criteria generally exhibited superior VfM compared to non-ESG funds. The results showed that ESG funds often outperform non-ESG funds in terms of profitability, even when adjusted for charges. |
