Uma arte para o antropoceno: Ai Weiwei e o diálogo transatlântico entre Brasil e Portugal

Abstract

Esta dissertação propõe-se a discutir qual o lugar da Arte no Antropoceno, a já popularizada denominação para a nova era geológica que assinala os impasses do sistema terrestre em face de uma crise ambiental sem precedentes, pautada por eventos climáticos extremos e acelerada perda de biodiversidade - uma via sem retorno resultante do impacto das atividades humanas no planeta. A partir de algumas discussões recentes em torno do conceito de Antropoceno, iremos explorar de que forma a esfera da arte pode ser relevante para o alargamento dos debates em torno da noção de sustentabilidade. O objeto de investigação é um conjunto selecionado de obras do artista Ai Weiwei que estiveram patentes nas exposições “Raiz”, no Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, em 2019; e “Entrelaçar”, no Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves e no Parque de Serralves, localizados no Porto, em Portugal, em 2021. Investigamos a trajetória do artista, as suas influências e os temas recorrentes nas obras apresentadas, o seu compromisso ativista e as formas pelas quais estas criações dialogam com os conceitos de sustentabilidade e de Antropoceno. O trabalho procurará refletir sobre a possibilidade de pensarmos o Antropoceno e o colapso ecológico considerando os contributos da esfera da arte para a compreensão dos desafios globais colocados por esta nova época marcada pelas alterações climáticas e pelo avolumar das crises ambientais.

This dissertation aims to discuss the place of Art in the Anthropocene, the already popular name for the new geological era that highlights the impasses of the Earth system in the face of an unprecedented environmental crisis, driven by extreme weather events and accelerated loss of biodiversity - a path of no return resulting from the impact of human activities on the planet. Based on some recent discussions around the concept of Anthropocene, we will explore how the sphere of Art can be relevant to broadening debates around the notion of sustainability. The object of investigation is a selected set of works by the artist Ai Weiwei that were on display in the exhibitions “Raiz” exhibitions, at the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2019; and “Entrelaçar”, at the Serralves Contemporary Art Museum and Serralves Park, located in Porto, Portugal, in 2021. We investigated the artist's trajectory, his influences and the recurring themes in the works presented, his activist commitment, and the ways in which these creations dialogue with the concepts of sustainability and the Anthropocene. The work will seek to reflect on the possibility of thinking about the Anthropocene and ecological collapse considering the contributions of the sphere of Art to understanding the global challenges posed by this new era marked by climate change and the increase in environmental crises.
