Os processos de integração escolar dos descendentes de imigrantes Portugueses em Inglaterra: Perspetivas de estudantes e suas famílias

Abstract

Esta dissertação diz respeito ao desafios e apoios na integração escolar dos descendentes de imigrantes portugueses no sistema de ensino inglês, a partir da perspetiva das famílias e seus descendentes. Tem como objetivos perceber a perspetiva dos progenitores e descendentes de imigrantes sobre a integração no sistema escolar inglês, averiguar os tipos de apoios à integração existentes, caracterizar as famílias portuguesas imigrantes e perceber a importância do domínio da língua inglesa na experiência migratória. Nesta investigação, foi usado o método qualitativo através da realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas. As entrevistas foram realizadas a progenitores e os seus descendentes, imigrantes em Inglaterra, Surrey. Após a análise dos dados, foi possível perceber que a integração dos descendentes e dos progenitores a nível do contexto escolar inglês é bastante positiva. Apesar de experiências migratórias e de integração distintas, conclui-se que os descendentes e os seus progenitores se sentem bem integrados nas escolas que os seus filhos frequentam e na sociedade inglesa. Apesar de terem existindo desafios estes não são predominantes atualmente, não influenciando a sua atual experiência no sistema escolar inglês. O mesmo poderá ser dito em relação aos apoios existentes à integração, sendo estes não predominantes de acordo com as experiências dos entrevistados, mas em simultâneo não é sentida uma falta de apoio por parte dos descendentes e suas famílias, por parte das escolas.

This dissertation is about the challenges and support in the school integration of the descendants of Portuguese immigrants into the English education system, from the perspective of families and their descendants. Its objectives are to understand the perspective of the parents and descendants of immigrants on integration into the English school system, to find out what types of support exist for integration, to characterize portuguese immigrant families, and to understand the importance of mastering the English language in the migratory experience. The qualitative method used in this research was semi-structured interviews. The interviews were carried out with parents and their descendants, all immigrants in England, Surrey. After the data analysis, it was possible to see that the integration of descendants and parents in the English school context is quite positive. Despite their different migratory and integration experiences, it can be concluded that the descendants and their parents feel very well integrated into the schools their children attend and into English society. Although there were challenges, these are not prevalent today and do not influence their current experience of the English school system. The same can be said of existing support for integration, which is not prevalent according to the interviewee’s experiences, but at the same time, there is no lack of support for descendants and their families from schools.
