Dinâmicas de género nos bombeiros: Perspetivas de mulheres e homens

Abstract

Nesta dissertação pretendeu-se aprofundar as dinâmicas de género no contexto dos bombeiros, onde as mulheres estão em minoria (são tokens). Foi explorada a história dos bombeiros em Portugal e analisados os três fenómenos teorizados por Kanter (1977, 1993), em relação às mulheres tokens: i) a sua elevada visibilidade; ii) a polarização das diferenças por parte do grupo dominante; e iii) a assimilação aos papéis estereotípicos do seu grupo de pertença. Procurou-se também identificar as estratégias adotadas pelas mulheres neste contexto masculino e as perspetivas dos homens sobre a presença de mulheres nos bombeiros. Pretendemos, assim, considerar a intersecção entre a perspetiva de género e o tokenism, através da análise das vivências e estratégias das mulheres no exercício das suas funções. Numa perspetiva qualitativa, foram realizadas 18 entrevistas semiestruturadas a nove mulheres e nove homens, com idades entre os 24 e 56 anos (M=38,19; DP=9,44), de seis corporações de bombeiros. A análise temática de Braun e Clarke (2006) revelou oito temas: i) ingresso nas corporações de bombeiros; ii) obstáculos genderizados no contexto profissional; iii) genderização da profissão de bombeiros/as; iv) a caminho da igualdade de género na profissão; v) a in/visibilidade das mulheres nos bombeiros; vi) a polarização das diferenças entre mulheres e homens; vii) a assimilação aos papéis estereotípicos das mulheres; e viii) as estratégias das mulheres para gerirem a condição de tokens. Em conclusão, as mulheres enfrentam as consequências negativas identificadas por Kanter (1977, 1993) e existem obstáculos que dificultam a promoção da igualdade de género neste contexto profissional.

This dissertation delves into gender dynamics within the context of firefighters, where women are the minority (they are tokens). It explores the history of firefighters in Portugal and analyses the three phenomena theorized by Kanter (1977, 1993) regarding women as tokens: i) their high visibility; ii) the polarization of differences by the dominant group; and iii) assimilation into stereotypical roles within their group of affiliation. It also seeks to identify the strategies women adopt in this male-dominated context and the men's perspectives regarding women's presence in the firefighting profession. Thus, we intend to consider the intersection between gender perspective and tokenism by analysing women's experiences and strategies in carrying out their duties. From a qualitative perspective, 18 semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine women and nine men, aged between 24 and 56 years old (M=38.19; SD=9.44), representing six fire departments. Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis (2006) revealed eight themes: i) entry into fire departments; ii) gender-related obstacles in the professional context; iii) gendering of the firefighter profession; iv) progress towards gender equality in the profession; v) the visibility or invisibility of women in firefighting; vi) the polarization of differences between women and men; vii) assimilation into stereotypical roles for women; and viii) women's strategies for managing the token condition. In conclusion, women face the negative consequences identified by Kanter (1977, 1993), and some obstacles hinder the promotion of gender equality in this professional context.
