Exposição ao conflito interparental e qualidade das relações pais-filhos em adultos emergentes: O papel mediador das representações de culpa e de ameaça

Abstract

A exposição ao conflito interparental destrutivo é um fator de risco para o funcionamento psicossocial dos indivíduos ao longo da vida, estando associada a dificuldades em manter relações interpessoais saudáveis. Contudo, ainda pouco se sabe sobre as especificidades deste fenómeno nos adultos emergentes. Com o objetivo de aumentar o conhecimento científico sobre este tema, o presente estudo analisou o papel mediador das representações de culpa e ameaça na associação entre o conflito interparental destrutivo e as interações negativas e perceção de suporte dos adultos emergentes na sua relação com as suas figuras parentais. Adicionalmente, analisou-se também o papel moderador da nacionalidade (i.e., portuguesa e brasileira) nesses potenciais efeitos de mediação. Participaram neste estudo 250 adultos emergentes portugueses e brasileiros, com idade entre os 18 e os 25 anos. Considerando a amostra completa, os resultados revelaram que a exposição dos adultos emergentes ao conflito interparental estava associada a maiores perceções de culpa, que, por sua vez, estavam associadas a uma maior perceção de interações negativas com ambas as figuras parentais. Além disso, observou-se um papel moderador significativo da nacionalidade: a associação entre a exposição ao conflito interparental e as interações negativas com a figura materna foi mediada pelas representações de culpa nos participantes portugueses e pelas perceções de ameaça nos adultos emergentes brasileiros. Os resultados deste estudo contribuem para expandir a literatura acerca dos efeitos do conflito interparental nos adultos emergentes, evidenciando diferenças em função do contexto cultural dos participantes, e tendo importantes implicações para a prática.

Exposure to destructive interparental conflict is a risk factor for individuals’ psychosocial functioning throughout their life and is associated with difficulties in maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships. However, little is known about the specificities of this phenomenon in emerging adults. Aiming to increase scientific knowledge on this topic, the present study analyzed the mediating role of emerging adults’ appraisals of self-blame and threat in the associations between destructive interparental conflict and their perceptions of their relationship with their parents, in terms of perceived negative interactions and support. In addition, the moderating role of participants’ nationality (i.e., Portuguese and Brazilian) in these potential mediation effects was also analyzed. Participants of this study were 250 emerging adults of Portuguese and Brazilian nationality, aged between 18 and 25. Considering the whole sample, the results revealed that emerging adults' exposure to conflict was associated with higher levels of self-blame appraisals, which in turn were associated with greater perceptions of negative interactions with both parental figures. Results also revealed a significant moderating role of participants’ nationality in the hypothesized mediation pathways: the association between exposure to interparental conflict and negative interactions with the mother figure was mediated by representations of guilt in the Portuguese participants and by perceptions of threat in the Brazilian participants. The results of this study contribute to expanding the literature on the effects of interparental conflict on emerging adults, highlighting differences depending on the cultural background of the participants, and bearing important implications for practice.
