Providing foodora couriers with e-vehicles for food delivery in Sweden: A case study on courier efficiency and cost savings

Abstract

Over the last couple of years the e-commerce sector has been growing exponentially. This growth is boosted through a continuous increase in the public demand for quick and efficient deliveries. More last-mile delivery companies are looking at sustainable alternatives to reduce their carbon footprint. One way to do this is through using e-vehicles for deliveries. The sustainable e-vehicles for last-mile delivery operations have been improving over the years, here they are explored as a viable urban logistics solution. This empirical thesis, conducted through a case study, analyses the possibility of making foodora’s current business model more sustainable. The data is collected in Malmo (Sweden) where couriers are given sustainable equipment and an e-vehicle. The goal is to see whether it is possible for the company to invest in more sustainable initiatives while maintaining a profitable cost per order. It also looks at the courier's perspective: what is the impact of the changes and how will they perceive them? The initial findings showcase that the UTR of the couriers increases, which leads therefore to an increase in the hourly earnings. Furthermore, the cost per order decreases. In the end these changes turned out not to be significant enough, resulting in a loss in the initial investment. The battery and weather conditions have been the biggest blockers for not reaching the targeted UTR. Though, the general perspective from the couriers is very positive. The concluding remarks are that e-vehicles are currently not suitable for food delivery despite the higher earnings per hour.

Ao longo dos anos mais recentes, o comércio eletrónico cresceu exponencialmente. Isso é impulsionado por uma crescente procura, por parte do consumidor, de entregas rápidas e eficientes. Cada vez mais, empresas de entregas buscam alternativas sustentáveis que reduzam a emissão de carbono; e, uma das soluções é o uso de veículos movidos a energia elétrica. A utilização de veículos elétricos tem aumentado ao decorrer dos anos e, nesse contexto, eles têm sido explorados como uma solução viável para problemas de logística urbana. Esta dissertação, procura lançar luz, através de um estudo de caso, sobre a possibilidade de mudança do atual modelo de negócios da foodora para um mais sustentável. Os dados foram recolhidos em Malmo, Suécia, onde os entregadores recebem equipamentos sustentáveis e um veículo eletrónico. O objetivo é verificar a possibilidade do investimento em iniciativas sustentáveis, mantendo rentável o custo por pedido. Também analisa a perspetiva do entregador sobre como essas mudanças impactam e são percebidas por eles. As descobertas iniciais mostram que a UTR, total de pedidos por hora, dos correios aumenta. Não obstante, o custo por pedido diminui. Entretanto, essas mudanças não foram significativas o suficiente, resultando em perdas no investimento inicial da foodora. A isso deve-se a problemas de bateria e fatores externos, como o clima. A perspetiva geral dos entregadores é que o novo modelo sustentável é positivo e gostariam de vê-lo crescer. As observações finais são que os veículos elétricos não são adequados para o comércio rápido, apesar de os entregadores verem um maior ganho por hora.
