Struggles of women to get to the leadership positions in South Africa

Abstract

This thesis explores women's struggles for leadership positions, focusing on a visible social barrier in everyday life. It follows the journey of women from the apartheid era to the present day, using South Africa as an example, while also highlighting a position of women and their assistance in the country's struggle for democracy and change. Furthermore, this dissertation investigates whether their struggle against the regime and for a better tomorrow has had an impact on their current situation and how South Africa has come to be one of only 11 countries in the world with gender-balanced governance. For far too long, women were invisible in the media, a fact that has changed over time and has given visibility to women's untamed and important voices. The dissertation focuses on visible struggles such as inequality, polygamy, lack of access to education, HIV, and Ukuthwala traditions and taboos, all of which affect their position in society and how they thrive, by incorporating digital and written interviews with female leaders.

Esta tese investiga as lutas das mulheres por posições de liderança, centrando-se numa barreira social visível na vida quotidiana. Enfoca a viagem das mulheres desde a era do apartheid até aos dias de hoje, utilizando a África do Sul como exemplo, ao mesmo tempo que destaca uma posição das mulheres e a sua assistência na luta do país pela democracia e pela mudança. Além disso, esta dissertação investiga se a sua luta contra o regime e por um amanhã melhor teve impacto na sua situação actual e como a África do Sul passou a ser um dos únicos 11 países do mundo com uma governação equilibrada em termos de género. Durante demasiado tempo, as mulheres foram invisíveis nos meios de comunicação social, um facto que mudou ao longo do tempo e deu visibilidade às vozes indomadas e importantes das mulheres. A dissertação centra-se em lutas visíveis como a desigualdade, a poligamia, a falta de acesso à educação, o VIH, e as tradições e tabus Ukuthwala, que afectam a sua posição na sociedade e a forma como prosperam. A dissertação incorpora entrevistas digitais e escritas com líderes femininas.
