A representação de personagens negras em livros infantis

Abstract

Neste estudo analisaram-se as representações de personagens racializadas e não-racializadas em livros infantis sobre a temática da diversidade étnico-racial, publicados em Portugal. Adotou-se um olhar crítico sobre o conceito de diversidade, e sobre as correntes multiculturalistas que entendem a questão a partir de um viés celebrativo e relativista que contribui para a manutenção das relações de poder. O objetivo foi compreender as representações destas personagens em várias dimensões (físicas, psicológicas e Comportamentais), para perceber de que forma é tratada a questão da diversidade étnico-racial. Utilizou-se a análise de conteúdo para analisar 8 livros recomendados pelo Plano Nacional de Leitura e presentes no catálogo da Rede de Bibliotecas Municipais de Cascais. Estes livros destinam-se a leituras iniciais e a crianças entre os 6 e os 11 anos. Os resultados apontam que os livros infantis reproduzem o discurso celebrativo e relativista sobre a diversidade. E que, são as personagens negras as que apresentam maior proximidade com os mundos da imaginação e da criatividade , as personagens brancas são as que mais se questionam sobre a sua identidade e sobre o seu lugar de pertença. O estudo evidenciou a Importância de o mercado editorial tornar-se mais representativo ao nível da produção de personagens racializadas, e ao nível da autoria.

This study analyzed the representations of racialized and non-racialized characters in children's books on the theme of ethnic-racial diversity, published in Portugal. A critical look was taken at the concept of diversity, and at the multiculturalist schools that understand the issue from a celebrative and relativistic perspective that contributes to the maintenance of power relations. The goal was to understand the representations of these characters in various dimensions (physical, psychological, and behavioral), to understand how the issue of ethnic-racial diversity is dealt with. Content analysis was used to analyze 8 books recommended by the National Reading Plan and present in the catalog of the Cascais Municipal Library Network. These books are intended for early reading and for children between 6 and 11 years old. The results indicate that children's books reproduce the celebrative and relativist discourse about diversity. And that, it is the black characters who present the greatest proximity to the worlds of imagination and creativity. The white characters are the ones who question the most about their identity and their place of belonging. The study highlighted the importance of the publishing market becoming more representative in terms of the production of racialized characters, and in terms of authorship.
