A infecundidade voluntária: A escolha por uma vida sem filhos

Abstract

Espera-se, socialmente, que em algum momento da vida uma mulher se torne mãe. Os ideais repronormativos assentam na ligação indissociável entre a mulher e a maternidade que se assume como um destino quase inevitável na vida das mulheres. Com este trabalho pretende-se dar um contributo para o debate e compreensão do fenómeno da não maternidade voluntária, através da análise de trajetórias de vida de treze mulheres portuguesas que não querem ter filhos. Procurou-se compreender o que está por trás de uma decisão de não querer ter filhos, sobretudo no que diz respeito às dimensões da vida que estas mulheres mais valorizam, os motivos que as mesmas apontam para a sua decisão e a sua posição face à maternidade. Através de entrevistas biográficas, tentou-se compreender a forma como estas mulheres constroem e vivenciam uma decisão de não ter filhos. A análise permitiu identificar três perfis correspondentes a diferentes processos de construção da decisão. Os resultados apontam para a construção da decisão de não ter filhos como um processo que vai ocorrendo ao longo da trajetória de vida de uma pessoa. A opção pela não maternidade nem sempre é precoce e irrevogável, podendo apresentar graus variáveis de rejeição e de segurança face à decisão ao longo do tempo. Independentemente do momento e do contexto de vida em que uma mulher se encontre, todas as narrativas de infecundidade voluntária são importantes para o estudo deste fenómeno.

It is expected, socially, that a woman at a certain moment of her life becomes a mother. The repronormative ideals fall on the indissociable connection between the woman and the maternity that is assumed almost as an inevitable destiny in a woman’s life. With this work, the goal is to give a contribute to the debate and comprehension of the voluntary childlessness phenomenon, through the analysis of the trajectory of life of thirteen Portuguese women that do not want to have children. In this work, the intent was to try and comprehend what is behind the decision of not wanting to have children, specially in regards to what dimensions of life these women most value, the motives that they indicate for their decision and their stand on maternity. Through biographic interviews, this work tries to understand the way these women build and experience the childfree decision. The analysis allowed to identify three profiles that match different processes of the construction of the decision. The results point to the construction of the childfree decision as a process that occurs throughout the life course of a person. The decision of childfree is not always premature and irrevocable, as it can present various variable degrees of rejection and security in regards to the decision throughout time. No matter the moment or life context that the woman is in, all narratives of voluntary childlessness are important for the study of this phenomenon.
