Desconforto subjectivo e regulação emocional nos estudantes de medicina dentária em Portugal

Abstract

Este trabalho incide sobre o estudo do desconforto subjectivo e da regulação emocional entre os estudantes de medicina dentária em Portugal. Numa revisão da literatura, define conceitos e aborda noções gerais sobre as principais entidades clínicas que integram o desconforto subjectivo, como a ansiedade, a depressão, o stress e o burnout; revê os principais dados publicados para a população de estudantes de medicina e aborda alguns conceitos sobre emoções e regulação emocional. O estudo teve como objectivo determinar os níveis de desconforto subjectivo e as principais dificuldades de regulação emocional sentidas entre os estudantes de medicina dentária em Portugal. Numa amostra de 296 alunos, utilizaram-se três instrumentos de avaliação: o Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), o Questionário de Regulação Emocional (QRE) e a Escala de Dificuldades na Regulação Emocional (EDRE). A recolha de dados decorreu em três estabelecimentos de ensino de medicina dentária, abarcando zonas diferentes do País, o ensino público e privado. Os resultados revelaram que os níveis de desconforto subjectivo sentido pelos estudantes de medicina dentária em Portugal estão dentro dos valores adequados a uma população não clínica, com níveis de ansiedade maiores para os alunos do sexo feminino do que para os do sexo masculino, e com algumas variações em função do ano de escolaridade e da faculdade. Concluiu-se ainda que existem algumas dificuldades de regulação emocional, em especial, na tomada de consciência das suas respostas emocionais e, quando em presença de emoções negativas, em manter os objectivos traçados e elaborar estratégias de regulação emocional.

The objectives of this work are to investigate the levels of distress and the main difficulties on emotion regulation among dental students in Portugal. After a review on literature focusing on distress and emotion regulation among medical students, the authors used as cross-sectional descriptive survey of 296 students from the final three years of the degree, from three main dental schools in Portugal. The purpose was to explore how distressed dental students were, which strategies for emotion regulation did they use more often and which were their main difficulties in emotion regulation. We used the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), for the first purpose, the Questionnaire of Emotion Regulation (QRE), for the second and the Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale (DERS) for the last one. The results showed that distress levels of dental students in Portugal were similar to the non–clinical population and that female students felt more anxious that male students. We also noticed that anxiety levels were different from school to school. The main difficulties dental students felt in emotion regulation were in “awareness”, meaning that it is difficult for them to be aware of their emotional responses, and in “goals“, reflecting their difficulties in concentrating and accomplishing tasks when they were experiencing negative emotion.
