Identidades boémias em Lisboa: Discursos e vivências (1850-1914)

Abstract

Esta investigação toma como objeto de estudo a boémia e o imaginário boémio, analisando as formas como se manifestaram em Lisboa na segunda metade do século XIX e inícios do século XX. Procura identificar as origens da introdução e difusão no contexto nacional da boémia, entendida enquanto construção social, cultural e artística erigida em dois planos interligados: o discursivo e o vivenciado. A boémia abarca uma pluralidade de comportamentos e posicionamentos sociais, políticos e económicos, sendo caracterizada por formas de estar que não lhe são exclusivas. Dos diversos novos significados que assumiu na época, destaca-se a boémia literária e artística, da qual emerge um paradigma do que é a vida de um escritor, pintor, músico ou ator, principalmente em início de carreira. A boémia é então aqui conceptualizada enquanto identidade que se afirma no contexto urbano, revelando transformações operadas no estatuto e destaque social do artista, na valorização de sociabilidades mundanas e no seu papel como facilitadoras de relações de trabalho e de integração no meio literário e artístico. Partindo da premissa de que a boémia corresponde a um fenómeno sociocultural transnacional, identificam-se vias de circulação e apropriação dos seus ideais, valores e pertenças no contexto nacional. Sublinha-se o papel da circulação de textos literários franceses, com especial atenção para a produção de traduções e adaptações em português, explorando os temas e modelos que difundiram e os fatores que impulsionaram a sua popularização, num processo que começou a consolidar-se e acelerar a partir da década de 1870. Analisa-se ainda os principais eixos da caracterização da vida boémia a nível local, explorando representações presentes em discursos difundidos através de diversos meios e registos, bem como indivíduos, grupos, práticas e espaços que a personificaram no contexto lisboeta. A pesquisa está alicerçada na consulta e interpretação de um vasto e diversificado conjunto de fontes: imprensa, memórias e literatura têm sido privilegiadas nos estudos sobre a boémia e foram também aqui utilizadas, a par de outras fontes como códigos de civilidade, manuais de jogos, textos de carácter científico, dicionários, entre outras.

This research focuses on the Bohemian lifestyle and imagery and examines the ways in which it was manifested in Lisbon from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. The project focus is to identify the origins of the introduction and dissemination of bohemianism in the national context, taking it as a social, cultural, and artistic construction built on two interconnected fields: the discursive and the experienced. Bohemian life encompassed a plurality of attitudes and social, political, and economic types; its main characteristics were not exclusive to it. Among the different new meanings it gained at that time, this project explores the literary and artistic bohemia, focusing on the emerging paradigm for the life of a writer, painter, musician, or actor, especially at an earlier phase of their careers. The artistic and literary bohemia is here conceptualized as an identity that progressively emerges and grows in the urban context, reflecting dynamics felt in the artist’s status and social prominence, in the valorization of mundane sociabilities, and in their role as facilitators of work relations and integration in the literary and artistic milieu. Taking bohemianism as a transnational sociocultural phenomenon, this research identifies and analyses the circulation and appropriation of these ideas, values, and sense of belonging in the Portuguese context. The role played by the circulation of French literary texts is highlighted, with emphasis on the production of translations and adaptations in the Portuguese language, exploring recurring themes and models and the factors that contribute to their popularization in a process that began to consolidate and accelerate from the 1870s onwards. The main aspects of the local bohemian life are also analyzed, examining its representations on diversified discourses, as well as individuals, groups, practices, and spaces that personified it in the Lisbon context. The research is based on the interpretation of a vast and diverse set of sources: press, memoirs, and literature have been privileged sources in bohemianism studies and are also used here, along with other sources such as etiquette books, gaming manuals, scientific texts, dictionaries, among many other.
