Abstract: If your students come from a Western culture and have a middle-class background, they probably found it easy to answer question 1. However, they may have struggled to figure out the meaning of the words in question 2 and 3, which are taken from intelligence tests designed for African Americans in the United States (Dove, 1971; Redden and Simon, 1986).
