This thesis aims to study the relationship of consumer credit offered to private consumers (households) with economic growth in Portugal, analyzing its interaction with GDP, inflation, savings, and retail sales. Despite its importance to the economy and its quick growth from the 1990s onwards, Consumer credit still lacks empirical studies, both at the national and international levels. When analyzing the literature, no consensus was reached on whether the offer of credit is something positive or harms economic development, with divergent results among the articles consulted. To answer whether in Portugal credit has a positive impact on GDP and how it interacts with the other variables, a VAR model was created in the first differences. Through the VAR, it was found that there is no Granger Causality between consumer credit and GDP, in any direction, even though both have a strong correlation. Credit is only capable of helping to forecast retail sales, having a unidirectional causal relationship in this case. |
