O Instituto Militar dos Pupilos do Exército sob a égide do Estado Novo: continuidades e mudanças na educação

Abstract

A hipótese formulada pelo presente estudo envolve a relação entre o Estado Novo e os Pupilos do Exército e o estabelecimento de continuidades e mudanças na educação no período de 1926-1969. O capítulo inicial inclui os primeiros quinze anos da instituição, sob o governo da I República, após a sua criação pelo General António Xavier Barreto em 1911. No capítulo central, denominado “O Instituto sob a égide do Estado Novo”, são estabelecidos os parâmetros e os objectivos do Estado Novo através da legislação, do fluxo de professores e alunos e do investimento estatal a nível económico, social e político. Procedeu-se à descrição das carreiras e desempenhos dos oito directores vigentes e à análise do quotidiano institucional englobando: curricula, relacionamentos do corpo docente e discente, actividades desportivas e recreativas, instrução militar e espírito associativo dos estudantes. Os guiões de entrevista, distribuídos aos alunos de 1926-1969, não alcançaram as expectativas mas os resultados foram, todavia, expostos no trabalho. Os últimos capítulos incluem descrições comparativas entre os Pupilos e o Colégio Militar e outros colégios militares a nível mundial. O interesse e motivação da tese sintetizam-se em dois factores: o desafio de uma área pouco explorada (pese embora os trabalhos de Paulo Mendes Pinto e de Alexandre Cabral) e o desejo de persistir na pesquisa iniciada pela tese de Mestrado pois os dois estabelecimentos de ensino estudados – Os Pupilos e o Instituto de Odivelas – viveram sob a égide do Estado Novo, sob a tutela dos mesmos Ministérios, pautaram-se por idênticos regulamentos e absorveram, cremos, análogas ideologias.

The hypothesis of the present study involves the relationship between “Estado Novo” and “Pupilos do Exército” in the establishment of continuities and changes in the pupils’education in 1926-1969. The initial chapter includes a summary of the first 15 years of the institution, under the I Republic, after its foundation by General António Xavier Correia Barreto in 1911. The subsequent and most voluminous chapter, entitled “O Instituto sob a égide do Estado Novo”, involves the analysis of the parameters and objectives of the “Estado Novo” including: institutional legislation, flow of teachers and pupils and the State investments within the economic, social and political scopes. This chapter describes the careers and achievements of eight directors and the respective school environments embracing: curricula, day-to-day relations of teachers/students, sports and leisure activities, military education and the pupils’ spirit of association. The interviews, distributed to the ex-students of 1926-1969, did not meet the expectations, by providing sufficient data for the conclusions, but were, nevertheless, summarized. Comparisons between “Pupilos” and “Colégio Militar” and some other military colleges in the world are shown in the final chapters. The interest and motivation behind this thesis is associated with two factors: the challenge of an area ventured by few (in spite of the excellent works of Paulo Mendes Pinto and Alexandre Cabral) and the desire to pursue along the lines of my Master’s since both institutions – Pupilos and Instituto de Odivelas – lived under “Estado Novo”, were supervised by the same Ministers, followed similar regulations and were inculcated with identical ideologies.
