A influência do peso na simulação da claridade da cor

Abstract

Os estudos sobre a simulação visual da cor durante a compreensão da linguagem têm apresentado resultados inconsistentes. Paralelamente, são poucos os estudos que exploram se a simulação motora pode influenciar a compreensão da linguagem sobre a cor. Por exemplo, uma lacuna existente nesta área é a ausência de estudos que relacionem o peso e a cor de objetos em tarefas de compreensão da linguagem. O presente estudo procura investigar a influência do peso na simulação da claridade da cor utilizando a Sentence-Picture Verification Task. Os participantes (N=50) leram frases relativas a objetos, implicativas do seu peso (pesado vs. leve). Seguidamente, decidiam se o objeto imediatamente apresentado foi ou não mencionado na frase. O objeto apresentado variava na claridade da cor (mais escuro vs. mais claro). Com base na literatura, avançámos como hipótese que os participantes deveriam responder mais rapidamente aos objetos com cores claras após lerem uma frase sobre objetos leves e aos objetos com cores escuras após lerem uma frase sobre objetos pesados. Os resultados obtidos revelaram um efeito principal significativo de frase, com respostas mais rápidas para a frase “pesada”. No entanto, nem o efeito principal da imagem e, principalmente, a interação entre frase e imagem, não foram significativos. Estes resultados não vão ao encontro das hipóteses colocadas. Os resultados são discutidos com base na literatura da cognição corporalizada, sendo ainda identificadas algumas limitações do paradigma que poderão informar estudos futuros.

Studies on visual simulation of color during language comprehension have revealed inconsistent results. There is also a lack of studies that show that motor simulation can influence comprehension of language about color. For example, one existing gap in this area of research concerns the lack of studies addressing the relationship between the weight and color of objects in language comprehension tasks. The present study seeks to investigate the influence of weight on the simulation of color clarity using the Sentence - Picture Verification Task. Participants (N=50) read sentences that implied different weight of objects (heavy vs. light). Afterwards, they decided if the subsequently presented pictured object was mentioned or not in the sentence. The pictured object varied in color clarity (darker vs. brighter). Based on the existing literature, the hypothesis was that participants should respond to objects with brighter colors faster after reading a sentence about lighter objects, as well as to objects with darker colors after reading a sentence about heavier objects. Results showed a significant main effect of sentence, with faster responses for “heavier” sentences. However, neither the main effect of the image nor the interaction between the sentence and the image were significant. These results do not support the formulated hypothesis. The results are discussed in the context of embodiment literature along some limitations in the paradigms that might inform future studies.
