Abstract: | O objetivo desta Dissertação é compreender o comportamento do setor bancário perante a financeirização da economia portuguesa desde 1990.
The aim of this work is to understand the behavior of the banking sector in relation to the financialization of the Portuguese economy since 1990. To this end, a case study was carried out to analyze the process that contributed, first, to the financialization of the Portuguese economy and then to relate the characteristics of this specific process with the transformations in the banking sector. Financialization contributed significantly to the increase of financial intermediation in the economy. There were significant changes in the financing structure of the Portuguese banking sector, which was able to expand the supply of credit to the non-financial private sector by resorting to financing in international markets. However, due to the structural characteristics of the economy, the banking sector has built a link between finance and the construction/housing sector. The results indicate that a large part of the expansion of credit supply has financed, in the sphere of production, the construction of real estate and, in the sphere of consumption, the purchase of housing by households. |
