Fotografia arquitectónica: em breve obsoleta?

Abstract

A tecnologia do render (CGI ou Computer Generated Imagery) é cada mais utilizada em várias áreas, tendo-se tornado parte da cultura visual do dia-a-dia, por vezes mesmo sem se perceber a sua presença, uma vez que, nos dias de hoje, os renders tem a capacidade tecnológica para competir visualmente com a fotografia e são utilizados ocasionalmente em substituição desta. Considerando o que parece estar a acontecer em algumas áreas, colocouse a questão: estará o mesmo a acontecer na prática da arquitectura? Estará o render a tornar a fotografia arquitectónica obsoleta? Assim, este trabalho tem por objectivo determinar quais são efectivamente as funções actuais da fotografia arquitectónica e do render na prática da arquitectura e descobrir se existem sobreposições entre elas, de forma a poder responder à questão de investigação. Uma investigação teórica sobre os temas da fotografia arquitectónica, do render, da sua história, evolução e progressiva aproximação até aos dias de hoje, possibilitou uma melhor compreensão e uma primeira reflexão sobre estas duas formas de representação e a sua relação, permitindo deste modo construir uma metodologia para a realização do estudo prático. O trabalho aqui apresentado desenvolvese então através de uma metodologia à base de questionários direccionados a arquitectos, a fotógrafos de arquitectura e a profissionais de rendering, que permitiram obter dados, a um nível prático, sobre a realidade da relação entre estas duas formas de representação. Os questionários procuram obter dados não só sobre as funções desempenhadas pela fotografia arquitectónica e pelo render, mas vão mais além, inquirindo sobre os motivos por detrás da escolha de um ou outro meio para certas situações, sobre que tipos de imagem são mais produzidos e que características são mais valorizadas em cada uma destas formas de representação. Os questionários produzidos e a análise dos resultados organizam-se, deste modo, em torno de três eixos de investigação propostos, que facilitam e estruturam a resposta à questão de investigação, sendo eles: quando, porquê e o quê? Ou fins/funções, motivos, tipos e características. Através dos resultados obtidos e depois da análise realizada, torna-se possível uma melhor compreensão sobre o fenómeno dinâmico que é a relação entre a fotografia arquitectónica e o render na prática da arquitectura actualmente. Os resultados do estudo prático revelam-se bastante claros, mostrando que, no que toca às funções, o eixo principal desta investigação, as sobreposições são bastante mínimas dentro da prática da arquitectura, sendo inclusivamente sugerido que, mesmo quando ocupam as mesmas funções, a fotografia e o render trabalham lado a lado, não competindo. Na prática da arquitectura, estes dois meios terão, provavelmente, sempre o seu lugar e funções, em maior ou menor grau. Contudo, os resultados deixam em aberto uma nova hipótese, sugerindo que talvez esta possa não ser a situação actual em outras áreas relacionadas com a arquitectura e com os produtores da sua imagem.

The technology known as rendering (CGI or Computer Generated Imagery) is, nowadays, being increasingly used, having surreptitiously become a part of every day’s visual culture, sometimes without us even realizing. Today, renderings have the technological potential to compete visually with photography and are even starting to be used in its place for some occasions and purposes. Considering what seems to be happening in some areas, the question emerged: is the same happening in architecture practice? Are renderings making architectural photography obsolete? Thus, this work has as its goal to determine what are currently and effectively the functions of architectural photography and rendering within architecture practice, and to determine whether or not these functions overlap, in order to obtain an answer to the research question. An investigation into architectural photography, rendering, their history, evolution and progressive convergence over the years, up until today, made for a better understanding and allowed for a first reflection about these two means of visual representation and their current relation, thus making possible the construction of an appropriate methodology for the implementation of the practical part of this research. The work presented here is then developed through a survey based methodology, aimed at architects, architectural photographers and rendering professionals, which allowed the gathering of data, at a practical level, about the reality of the relation between these two means of representation. The surveys aim to obtain not only data about the functions of architectural photography and rendering, but also about the reasons, the motives behind the choice of one mean over the other for certain situations, about the types of image that are most produced and about which characteristics are the most valued in each of these means of visual representation. The surveys and the following data analysis are thus organized through three main proposed research points, which facilitate and structure the answer to the research question: when, why and what? Or functions / ends, motives, types and characteristics. Through the obtained results and after their analysis, a better understanding about the dynamic phenomenon that is the current relation between architectural photography and rendering within architecture practice is made possible. The results of the practical study are clear, showing that in regards to the functions, the main research point of this work, there is very little overlapping between these two means within architecture practice, being even suggested that, when they do occupy the same functions, photography and rendering work side by side, instead of competing. Within architecture practice, these two forms of visual representation will most likely always have their own place and functions, to a greater or lesser degree. However, the results show a new hypothesis, suggesting that this might not be the current situation in other areas related to architecture and the production of its images.
