The Shape of Food: An analysis of urban agricultural shapes in Lisbon´s Greater Area: Socializing with Food: Paredes´s Pedagogical Horta

Abstract

A relevância do sistema alimentar tem sido ampliada através da sua fase de produção, especificamente agricultura urbana e a sua associação com os valores ecológicos, sociais e de saúde que recentemente têm ganho ímpeto. Contudo, na profusão de estudos publicados disponíveis, a sua morfologia e impacto urbano não têm sido suficientemente mencionados. O presente trabalho procura retificar isto ao contribuir com uma análise do planeamento e modelos morfológicos da Grande Área de Lisboa, para informar projetos futuros sobre os seus efeitos no território urbano e a sua população. Esta investigação identifica formas existentes e as questões económicas, sociais e de planeamento que as influenciam. O estudo conclui que a agricultura urbana não está a ser usada em todo o seu potencial pelos municípios da Grande Área de Lisboa, emergindo como um mero equipamento recreativo, socialmente exclusivo, e como um instrumento de paisagismo, sujeito a tendências de mercado. Maiores iniciativas terão de ser tomadas para que este tema possa responder aos atuais objetivos de sustentabilidade social e ecológica.

The relevance of the food system has been magnified through its production phase, namely urban agriculture and its association with the ecological, social and health values that currently have been gaining momentum. However, in the profusion of available studies published, its morphology and urban impact have not been sufficiently mentioned. The present study seeks to rectify this by contributing with an analysis of Lisbon’s Greater Area planning and morphological models, to inform future projects about their effects in the urban territory and its population. This research identifies existing shapes and the economic, social and planning issues that influence them. The study concludes urban agriculture is not being used to its full potential by Lisbon’s Greater Area municipalities, emerging as merely a socially exclusive recreational equipment and as a landscaping instrument, subject to market trends. Greater strides must be taken if this subject is to respond to the current social and ecological sustainability goals.
