Based on the interbank payments processed in the Portuguese component of the TARGET2 payment system, we have identified overnight loans in the unsecured interbank money market where at least one counterparty is an institution with current account open with Banco de Portugal. The identification of these operations allowed us to calculate, on a daily basis, the weighted-average interest rate of the transactions processed in the Portuguese component, which we have named to as PT – EONIA and PT - EONIA spread as the difference between PT - EONIA and the minimum bid rate for the main refinancing operations defined by the Eurosystem. Through an EGARCH model, we studied the existence of patterns in the interbank money market by including dummy variables related to calendar effects for a total of five periods. We conclude that, after the financial crisis, the effects that were previously relevant and, therefore, pattern generators, became irrelevant to explain the spread evolution, except for the last and first day of the quarter and of the year, respectively. |
