dc.description.abstract | A globalized world presents numerous opportunities, but also places new challenges, namely regarding language and communication in particular the need of mastering at least one second language (L2) besides the native one (L1). Literature has shown that communication in L1 is different than in L2, particularly the lower intensity of the affective and sensorimotor processing in L2. In parallel, several studies suggest that language influences the inferences we make about others and how we perceive their behavior. The present study seeks to analyze the way bilingual individuals of European Portuguese (L1) and English (L2) describe gender stereotype-based behaviors in both languages. First, we sought to replicate the "Linguistic Expectancy Bias" (Maass, Milesi, Zabbini & Stahlberg, 1995) that is, a more abstract description of stereotype consistent behaviors and a more concrete description of stereotype inconsistent behaviors. Secondly, because of the lower intensity of affective and sensorimotor processing, we expect that stereotypic descriptions in L2 (vs. L1) will be more abstract. Finally, L2 proficiency may moderate the results, in other words, the bigger the proficiency in L2 the lower the differences in the stereotype descriptions in L1 and L2 will be. These hypotheses were tested through a questionnaire (based on Wigboldus Wigboldus, Semin & Spears, 2000) applied to a sample of 110 participants, requesting four stereotypical behavioral descriptions varying in gender and desirability, in English and Portuguese. The results replicate the LEB, although this was observed in both languages and not moderated by L2 proficiency. | por |
